I hear boots following, and I instantly know it’s Blade, and we follow Skylar and the nurse through brown double doors and down a hallway.
The nurse gives us a small smile as she gestures to the door on her left, her eyes taking in our cuts with lust, but we ignore her and walk into the room behind Sky, who bursts into tears as she rushes over to a still Mama Lopez who looks pale.
Fuck.
“Mama?” Sky cries, gently cupping her mother’s cheeks, and I tilt my head, sadness flittering through me, knowing I can’t take her pain away.
“You should have told me…” Blade whispers, and I look to see his eyes on his sister and mother before he looks at me.
“It wasn’t down to me to tell you, Leo, and you know this. You just want someone to blame,” I confess, and he looks down. I mutter, “You made a mistake. You had to take over from your dad, so you saw everything his way and made a mistake. All you can do now is fix things.”
“You tried to tell me, though, a little bit,” he reminds me, “you could have just said everything,” and I sigh.
“I did, but only because I didn’t find it okay with how Anna was being treated, and at that time, I thought she had cheated on Brickonce. The brothers fuck around every day on their women and were being hypercritical, and then Anna told me the truth, knowing I wanted nothing more than to earn Sky’s trust back. Every time you said something stupid about Anna, she would flip because she’s her mother as much as she’s yours,” I say as Sky’s sobs can be heard, and we look towards her, and my heart sinks.
She’s lying on the bed, her head on Mama Lopez’s shoulder, holding her tightly.
“Please wake up, Mama, please,” she sobs, and I grind my back teeth.
“You need to go slowly, don’t push her, and for fuck’s sake, beg Mama Lopez for forgiveness,” I mutter before walking into the room, not able to stay away from my girl any longer.
I take a seat on the chair next to the bed before putting my hand on my girl's calf, showing her I’m here while keeping my other arm around my little girl. Blade moves to the other side of the bed and kneels, grabbing his mother’s hand and drops his head before the door fills and I look to see Brick, but he doesn’t enter the room. His eyes stay on his wife and complete utter fear etches off him but I don’t know if it’s because he could have lost his wife to death or because he thinks he’s lost her in life.
The next few weeks are going to be a roller coaster, and Brick, Blade, and the club have a lot to fucking make up for while hoping Skylar gives them a chance because not having her in your life, well, it’s a travesty, one I learned the hard way by putting the club first, something I will never do again.
She and Tate are my main focus from now on, even if it means leaving the club.
Chapter 25
Skylar – Three Days Later
I sigh as I lean my head on my fist as lift my legs to the side of me in the chair under my butt, just fitting, my eyes taking in Mama laying still on the hospital bed, still not awake even though the doctors have said nothing is keeping her asleep.
She should have woken by now.
I haven’t left the room since we arrived, and I don’t plan on leaving until Mama wakes up, meaning Nyx hasn’t left either, and neither has Tate.
Nyx doesn’t want her out of his sight, much to his mother’s dismay, and neither do I.
Seeing her lying on the cold floor in that warehouse, passed out, was the most terrifying moment of my life. I thought she was dead, I thought that woman was nasty enough to harm a child, and guilt tore through me because if I had stayed andconfronted the situation, then Lacey would have never managed to grab Tate, to begin with.
She would have been tied up and tortured until she named her accomplice or Venom would have figured it out and none of this would have happened and now, Tate is scared of her own shadow and Mama is refusing to wake up.
“You know, Mama, if you don’t wake up soon, I’ll just have to raid your closet,” I threaten, and I hear a snort from behind me near the window that I know is Nyx.
He’s set up a little coloring station for Tate as well as a bed for her while he sleeps on blankets on the floor and I stay on the chair.
“You can’t use her closet,” Lake says as she leans back in the chair opposite Mama and I raise a brow for an explanation, and she states, “She’s forever giving you clothes out of her closet. You need to try with something else, something she refuses for you to use…”
“She has a point,” Raya says while Ivy nods as she gently pats Hudson’s bottom.
Hmmm….
“What about her truck?” Luna asks as she walks in, hearing the end of the conversation, and takes a seat at the end of Mama’s bed, grabbing her foot gently.
She’s spent hours upon hours in this room with me, whereas Blade will show up here and there without a word to me, and Brick, well, he hasn’t been here at all.
Nyx’s dad, Bear, mentioned the man is falling apart with despair and guilt, but I can’t seem to make myself care. I know I should, I know people make mistakes, and I know Mama loves him despite those mistakes, thirty years with the man is proof of that but I just…
