“I love you, baby, but let’s get through the battle before we worry about having to burn our clothes.” Jayden chuckles.
“Fine.” I swipe a leg out, taking down another demon. “Where are the others from the third team?”
“I don’t know. You took Zeke out pretty easily so maybe they’re retreating? The enemy probably still wants them for something,” Jayden says and the clash of metal follows his words.
“Mia, you really should give up and run away with the rest of your team. You’ve lost,” Kira taunts.
“Not until that bitch, Beth, fights me,” Mia roars.
“You realize the little added power you got from beinggods touchedis going to your head, right? You can’t fight me. I’ll put you down in less than a second.” I shake my head.
“You’re a bitch and you stole Jayden from me. You will pay,” Mia snarls but can’t get past Kira.
“Beth, watch out,” Jayden roars and I duck into a crouch as an ax swings over my head.
I roll to the side as the ax hits the ground with a reverberating thud and I swing my blade at my attacker’s shins, taking him out at the ankles. It’s yet another lizard demon. I grimace. How many of those damn demons do they have? This is getting ridiculous. Orion needs to hurry up and get Artemis out of the temple.
“Anyone have eyes on the others? They were supposed to make their way here,” I call to Thad, Draven, Adrian, Jayden, and Kira.
“No sign of them yet,” Adrian says.
“They’ll be okay. Raven and Greyson aregods touched. I bet Raven is counting her kills right now.” Thad chuckles.
“Shit, I should have been counting, damn it,” I shout.
“You’re really worried about that right now?” Draven asks.
“You have met Raven, yes? She’s going to be insufferable.” I spin away from the blade careening toward my throat.
“Fair point. Maybe we all should have been counting our kills.” Draven scratches his head.
“Baby, now who isn’t paying attention?” Jayden blocks a blow to my head with his shadow sword.
“Fine. I just need eyes on the others.” I flip up in the air as two demons come at me from each side.
They collide, falling on each other’s swords. I scan the area for any sign of Raven and the others but I don’t see them. Fuck. Hopefully, Raven and the others are okay. My gaze collides with Thad’s and I realize that I’ve let myself get so distracted with the rest of the battle that I’ve dropped the magic keeping most of the monsters away.
The most dangerous monsters are closing in. Shit. I really got caught up in the battle and my own thoughts. My magic crackles along my skin as I stare up at the sky. It darkens and flashes of lightning streak across it. I direct the lightning to the closest group of monsters.
They shriek as lightning hits them and the cyclone rolls through, turning them to barbecued monster instantly. I never realized before what a good team the two storm gods could make if they just worked together more.
I will not make the same mistakes as my father. My team is important to me and to the world. If we can’t work together, then we are doomed to fail. I can’t let that happen because it’s not just our lives on the line.
“How long can you keep this up, Thad?” I ask.
“Not much longer. I’ve used more power than ever before,” he says, shoulders sagging.
I glance at him and can see the visible fatigue. This is pushing all his limits to the max but there are still hordes of monsters coming for us.
“Drop the cyclone; you’re going to burn yourself out,” I call over to him.
“No, I have a few more minutes left in me.” Thad slices through a demon with his trident.
“Save what you can, Thad. I don’t want you to be tapped out in case things go bad.” I duck under a blade and shoot magic from my palm at the monster that just attacked me.
Fuck, that was close.
“Fine,” he grumbles.
