“Nevada? Like Las Vegas?” I ask with a raised brow.

That was one place Mom always steered clear of when we moved around while I was a kid. I never thought about it at the time because we mainly moved from one small town to another.

“Possibly,” Adrian says, unsure.

“Are you sure that’s a great idea? I’m starting to think my mom knew more than she let on and avoided certain places because of that.” I drum my fingers on the center console.

“I don’t know. The sight isn’t giving me anything concrete. I just feel like Nevada is a good bet,” Adrian says.

“Fine. We can go through Barstow again and to Nevada.” I glance over at Jayden. “Do you think the birds will attack us here again?”

“I don’t know. They followed us to Winslow, so they might not be here again.” He squeezes my knee.

As we near Barstow, my eyes are glued to the sky. What if they just decide to use the same tricks all the time and we have to dodge the damn things again?

“Should we stop once we’re in town?” I ask.

Jayden nods. “Yeah, we’re gonna need gas soon and I would rather not run out because we can’t find another place.”

Raven sits forward. “I wonder if the creepy old lady will be there again.”

“Why would you think she would be there?” I turn to her.

“She was definitely Greek. There was something about her that gave me the creeps.” Raven shivers.

“Agreed, but I’ve never felt power like that before or since and we have met a bunch of the gods already.”

“I wonder who she was, then.” Raven plants her chin on her hand.

“Well, we can probably find out if she’s there again,” I say.

“Maybe some things are better left a mystery.” Jayden turns the wheel and pulls into the nearest gas station.

This trip has taken hours already and my body’s stiff when I hop out of the car.

“Come with me to get snacks.” I loop my arm around Raven’s.

“Sure,” she says, and we stroll together into the gas station.

The bell jingles behind us as we head inside. Raven is already pulling snacks off the shelves the minute we get through the door.

“You’re lucky you’re athletic because if you weren’t, you’d be huge.” I shake my head.

“Whatever, B. My metabolism has always been amazing.” She tosses her hair over her shoulder.

“Because…” A human walks by and I close my mouth on what I was about to say.

Nope. Do not sound like a crazy person in front of humans.

Raven raises her eyebrows at me and a smirk paints her lips as we walk down the chip aisle.

I glance at Raven as a familiar tap, tap, tap sounds on the next aisle over.

“It can’t be, right? That’s just too much of a coincidence.” I rush to the next aisle.

The same old woman with the crazy amount of power is walking along with her cane.

“You again,” she huffs. “What are you staring at?”
