We rush through the quad, and I keep my eyes focused on our destination in case anyone wants to stop us to chat. We don’t have time for that. We need to eat breakfast and get on the road.
Jayden opens the door for me again and we head into the cafeteria with his hand still on my back. I grab a tray and fill it with breakfast foods, putting some extras on my tray that we can have for snacks when on the road.
“You’re hungry today?” Jayden asks.
“I got extras for the trip. If we go through the desert again, there aren’t many places to stop along the way.”
Jayden nods and grabs a couple extra snacks as well and we head over to the Zeus table.
I sit in my usual seat with Jayden at my side and wave to Raven and Adrian. “Are we all packed to go?”
I grab the packs of Pop-Tarts off the tray and hand them to Jayden. He stuffs them in my bag along with the snacks he grabbed for himself.
“What are you guys doing?” Raven asked with a frown.
“Snacks for the trip.” I shrug.
“Yeah, after the fiasco in the underworld, that’s probably a good idea.” Raven turns to glance at the buffet.
“I think we have plenty.” I scoop up some eggs and take a bite.
I wish I could take more than just Pop-Tarts. The eggs taste amazing just like everything else in this place.
“Which way should we go?” I ask.
A commotion sounds from the front of the cafeteria, interrupting our conversation. Kira is at the beginning of the long row of tables, scanning the crowd.
When her eyes lock on mine, her shoulders slump and she rushes forward.
“Kira? What is it?” I ask.
I push myself up to meet her. Her breath is coming out in shallow pants and she bends, resting her hands on her knees.
“Dax, he’s gone.” She runs a hand through her sweaty blond hair.
Did she run from the infirmary?
“What do you mean, Dax is gone?” I ask.
Raven and Jayden both jump to their feet in alarm.
“I went to the healer’s office to check on him and make sure the restraints were holding. When I got there, he barreled through me and stomped from the room.” She chews her lip.
I notice a bruise forming on her cheek and wince. I know what it’s like being on the other end of Dax’s fist. It fucking hurts.
“Fuck, where did he go?” I ask, but I already know the answer.
“I followed him to the wards. I tried to stop him and that’s when this happened.” Kira points to her face.
“We need to go check on the healers and see what the hell happened.” I grab my tray, glancing longingly down at my mostly untouched breakfast with a huff.
I apparently can’t even eat without something bad happening anymore.
We all dump our trays and follow Kira out of the cafeteria. What will we find when we get to the healers? Will they be okay?
Did Dax trash the place? I chew my lip nervously as Jayden reaches for my hand and gives it a squeeze.
We race through the quad to the healer’s office and slam the door open. What the fuck did Dax do?
