“Snap him out of it, then, Draven.” I point at Dax.

“I’ll try, but I can’t get a lock on what kind of magic is being used.” Draven steps forward and holds a hand out.

Green magic glows in his palm and he closes his eyes.

Dax roars and rushes Raven with his sword held over his head. Raven sweeps her leg out, taking him out at the ankles and he stumbles to the ground with a thud.

“Now, Draven,” I yell.

The green glow shoots to Dax and washes over his head. Dax laughs as he rises to his feet but he’s still under the mind control. What good is Draven going to do us on the mission if he can’t save Dax?

His dark eyes blank of anything but his single-minded focus, he turns them to me, and a malicious grin pulls up the corners of his lips.

“I’ll be rewarded for your death, daughter of Zeus.” Dax lifts his sword and lunges at me.

The lightning bolt charm warms against my skin and I reach out and tap the charm. My whip unfurls in my hand.

“What are you doing, Beth? You can’t zap him.” Jayden reaches for me, but I shrug him off.

“Maybe that’s what he needs to come out of it,” I say.

I crack the whip at him and electricity crackles at the end. Dax jolts back, dodging the crack of my whip easily with a sneer.

“Give us our friend back, psycho.” I lash out with my whip again and nick Dax’s arm.

He doesn’t react to the pain at all. Fuck. This is so bad.

Dax swings his sword in a wide arc, and I just barely jump out of the way.

“Beth, use the charm,” Jayden shouts.

“Shit, I almost forgot about that.” I reach up, rubbing at the shadow charm.

Black shadows pour from the charm and wrap around me, swirling and writhing.

“Jayden? What the hell is it doing?” I ask, my voice rising an octave.

The shadows travel up my throat to my face and cover me in complete blackness. Blinking against the sudden darkness, I let my eyes adjust to my vision turning gray.

“You have to direct them, Beth,” Jayden says.

“This probably wasn’t the best time to test this out.” I duck another savage blow from Dax’s sword and roll away.

“Just tell them to build a wall in front of you.”

“I can barely see. How the hell do I tell them to build a wall in front of me?” I ask.

The shadows writhe across my skin until my vision is back to normal and there’s a black wall in front of me.

“Just like that.” Jayden grins.

Dax hacks at the wall with his sword but it doesn’t penetrate the shadow shield. Hades’ gift seriously kicks ass.

“Remind me to thank your dad. This is seriously wicked.”

“You can thank him after we get out of this mess and go visit Spot.” Jayden smirks.

“You hate it when I call him Spot,” I point out to him.
