Wolves are weird.
“What is going on here?” I whisper to Jayden.
“I don’t know. Maybe it’s some kind of dominance game.” He pulls me closer to him, eyeing the shifters surrounding us.
They don’t look outwardly hostile, but Greyson has warned us before that shifters are a rowdy bunch and sometimes hard to handle.
“What do you mean a dominance game?” I ask.
“You remember when Tristian found us in his territory? He was outwardly hostile and uncomfortable at first. I don’t think two alpha wolves can be in the same place for long without someone showing dominance and submission.”
“Wolves are weird,” I whisper.
Jayden chuckles. “Yeah, they are a bit weird.”
“We also have exceptional hearing.” Greyson grins.
“Shit. Sorry.” I shrink back into Jayden’s chest as I glance between all the wolves’ bemused expressions.
At least they aren’t taking it too seriously.
Raven throws her hands up. “Can we get to the point here? Where are the damn bulls terrorizing the mountains?”
“Yeah, we have other shit to do like stop a fucking world war from happening.” I pat Jayden’s hand and he releases me reluctantly.
“You are a strange bunch.” Randall stomps into the building we have been standing in front of this whole time.
“Where is he going? Are we just supposed to wander around the Colorado mountains until we find the giant rampaging bulls?” I grumble.
“No,” Randall calls from inside the building. “You’re supposed to follow me so I can show you the map.”
“I don’t usually just walk into a place I’m not invited.” I race after him.
This is very strange. I think he’s even worse than Tristian, and Tristian wanted to use us.
Greyson smirks. “Wolves don’t usually hand out formal invitations, Beth.”
He holds the door open for us and we follow the alpha up the stairs to a large open-floor office with dark wood accents on the walls and furniture.
There’s a large round table in the middle of the room with a map rolled out on it and small markers all over it.
“What is this?” I ask.
I would have thought they would use electronic GPS or something since they aren’t in danger from the monsters the way we are.
“Greyson told me about your aversion to technology.” Randall runs a hand through his salt-and-pepper hair.
“I love technology, but it attracts monsters.” I shrug.
Jayden leans over the table. “It’s good advice though. If you want this town to remain standing for any amount of time, I wouldn’t have any electronics around us. The bulls will sense we’re here and come after us.”
“I still don’t know what to think about you kids, but we aren’t getting any help from the humans,” Randall says with a sigh.
“Is this all the places where the bulls have been sighted?” I ask to get us back on track.
“Yeah, they have been rampaging in the forests for the last few days.” Randall points to a section on the map that isn’t far from our current location.
“Let’s go get rid of them then.” Raven plants her hands on her hips.
