“What’s going on, Adrian?” I ask, narrowing my eyes at him.
“Nothing, right, Draven?” Adrian glares at him.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about or why you’re looking at me like that.” Draven crosses his arms over his chest.
“You better be on our side, Draven. If I find out you’re trying to betray us, I don’t care who your dad is. I will destroy you.” I glare at the idiot.
Jayden’s gaze snaps to mine but quickly shifts back to the winding road in front of us. “Why would you jump to betrayal, baby?”
“Adrian had a vision and glared at him and I couldn’t help but remember the old woman’s words from yesterday telling me I would be betrayed.” I shift in my seat uncomfortably.
Draven scoffs, “You really think I would betray you?”
“You tell me.”
“Of course I wouldn’t betray you. That’s not what’s happening here.” Draven plants his hands on his hips.
“Why don’t I believe that?” Jayden’s grip on the steering wheel tightens.
“I would never betray Beth. You, I would definitely betray, but not her. Never her.”
“You think that’s any different?” I yell. “If you betray anyone in this SUV, you betray me.”
Jayden puts a hand on my thigh, squeezing gently. We round another bend and fire truck lights shine in front of us.
“I’m not betraying anyone. Slow down so I can work my magic,” Draven grumbles.
Jayden slows the SUV and Draven’s hands glow green with his power. He points at the firemen and they all hop in their trucks and drive off without sparing us a glance.
“Did you just control their minds?” I ask.
“Not exactly. It was a gentle suggestion that they don’t see us and this place is dangerous so they left.” Draven turns around to watch them drive away. “We’re clear.”
We drive through the evacuation zone and I wonder if it’s for nothing. “Do we even know if this alpha and his pack are still here?”
Greyson leans between me and Jayden. “Randall wouldn’t leave his territory for anything. They’re here. I’m sure they are trying to find a way to stop the bulls.”
The SUV lurches forward and we take the bumpy road into Grand Junction, but it’s like a ghost town. There are no people here on the streets or anywhere for a long time until we get to the heart of the town.
Men stand on the roads with their arms crossed over their chests. Are they the shifters? Are they mad that we’re here?
Greyson points to a street up ahead. “He said we could find him on East California.”
Jayden opens his mouth to say something but closes it when a group of men come into view outside a two-story building, all glaring at our SUV and crossing their arms over their chests.
“They all look like shifters,” I say, glancing back at Raven and Greyson.
“They are shifters.” Greyson stares out the window, growling at any shifter who looks at Raven too long.
“What is that?” I whisper to Raven.
“Fuck if I know. He didn’t even do that with Tristian.” She shrugs.
“Greyson?” I ask. “What are you doing?”
“Making sure that they know who the alpha is,” he growls.
“Why?” I ask slowly.
