“Las Vegas. She was adamant there is someone we need to talk to there.” Adrian shakes his head.

“We should probably listen to her. I think she’s one of the fates.”

I don’t want to go anywhere near Vegas because my mom always avoided it, but if one of the fates says we need to see someone there, what choice do we really have?

“What makes you think that?” Adrian asks.

“We met her at this very same gas station the last time we were in Barstow. She was crabby then too.” I huff out a laugh. “She remembered us even though we hadn’t said a word to her.”

“How? I got the impression she was blind.” Adrian plants his hands on his hips.

“Don’t the stories always depict the three fates sharing one eye. They can’t see in our sense, but through their sacrifice they can see all.”

Jayden jogs up and grabs the bags from my hand and kisses my cheek. “What’s wrong?”

“You remember the crazy old lady?” I ask.

“The one who just beat up Draven? How can I forget. It was like five minutes ago.” Jayden chuckles. “I’ll remember that for the rest of my life.”

Who could she have meant was a traitor? Is that why she whacked Draven? Is he going to betray us? Or was that a general statement?

“Yeah, she was the same one from last time and told me to watch out for traitors in the trials ahead.” I bite my bottom lip nervously.

“C’mon. We can talk this out on the way. We should get moving before it gets too late.” Jayden wraps an arm around me and leads me to the SUV.

He opens the door for me, and I get in the seat and put my seat belt on. He sets my snack bags next to my duffel on the floorboards in front of me before closing the door.

Jayden gets behind the wheel and starts the engine. “So, tell me about the old lady who has a mean swat.”

“Not funny,” Draven calls from the back. “I didn’t even do anything and she bashed me in the head.”

“You’ve done plenty to deserve that. My only regret is that I wasn’t there to see it.” I laugh.

“Not cool, Beth,” Draven grumbles.

“Whatever, Draven. You deserve a lot worse for what you’ve put us through.” I turn in my seat to glare at him. “I’m pretty sure that old woman is one of the fates, so she probably saw what you’ve been pulling and decided to punish you for it.”

“The fates?” Greyson asks with a frown.

“You know, the three sisters who share a single eye and one knows the past, another the present, and the other the future?” I ask, raising a brow at him.

“We are in some shit if the fates are watching us,” Jayden whispers.

“I don’t know if that’s entirely true.” I drum my fingers on my knee. “The stories always said they kept an eye on the heroes whose fates weren’t clear. It could mean several things.”

“It could mean that we could die on this mission.” Jayden turns to me with a raised eyebrow.

Adrian clears his throat. “The future is never set in stone.”

“Then how do you see everything?” I throw over my shoulder.

“I see the possibilities. I see what needs to be done to get the best possible outcome.” Adrian shrugs.

“The best possible outcome? Did that include me releasing every animal in the Oklahoma City Zoo for a crazed goddess?” I ask.

“You have to admit that was funny.” Adrian chuckles.

“It really wasn’t.”
