“Who cares? It will only blow up in our faces if we let it.” I wrap my arms around his neck, threading my fingers through his white-blond hair.
“That’s not how it works, Beth.”
“We can make it work like that. I don’t believe that you would fight death for me, but you won’t fight for our happiness.” I tug lightly on his hair and bring his face down to mine.
Jayden’s lips meet mine in a hungry kiss. Before I can blink, my back hits the wall as Jayden spins us around.
“I will fight anyone at any time for you,” Jayden whispers against my lips.
“You just won’t fight for you,” I mumble.
It pisses me off that he won’t fight for what he wants. He deserves everything, even if he lets others get in his head too often.
I shove him away from me and scrub a hand down my face.
“What’s wrong?” Jayden asks with a frown.
“I don’t know how to make you see that what you’re doing is stupid and it’s frustrating the hell out of me.”
“It won’t matter if I say the words. I have to prove it to you with my actions.” His eyes bore into mine.
“You still haven’t proven yourself from the last time you promised me you would.” I glare at him.
“I know.” Jayden’s shoulders slump.
He tilts his head back and covers his eyes. His frustration is clear in his posture.
Reaching out, I lay a hand on his chest over his heart. The steady rhythm of his heart beats beneath my palm and picks up slightly at my touch.
“You have to do better, Jayden.”
“I’m going to try, but you still may have to zap some sense into me sometimes.” He cups my cheek, grinning.
“Nah, I can’t zap you,” I say, tiptoeing up to reach his mouth. “You like it.”
I brush my lips over his, and he groans and grips my hips. His hand runs over my hip to my ass and he squeezes me, pulling my body flush with his.
“What can I say, I’m a sucker for everything you do,” he mumbles against my lips.
“Jayden,” I groan as I wiggle my hips in his grasp.
I need him. It’s been too long since we’ve been alone like this.
“No, Beth. I told you I won’t have you until I prove myself to you.” His hands flex on my ass. “I have even more to prove now apparently.”
My shoulders slump at his words, but he pulls me closer. He’s saying one thing but doing another.
My fingers tighten on his shirt as my magic buzzes angrily beneath my skin. He’s so infuriating sometimes. My fingers spark with lightning and Jayden moans.
“Fuck, Beth. Are you trying to kill me?” he asks.
“Oops,” I say with a grin.
“You’re not sorry. You know what that does to me,” Jayden grumbles but just squeezes me tighter.
“I never said I was,” I say with a giggle.
Jayden growls and lifts me up by the ass. I wrap my legs around him and thread my fingers through his hair.
