“Did he say Medea is behind this?” Jayden asks.

“Yup,” I say, popping thePat the end. “But she’s working for someone else and this twit willingly helped her for promises of wealth and power.” I kick the unconscious guy in the ribs.

It’s the least he deserves for selling out the academy. The sounds of battle die down and I search the battlefield for my friends.

We need to find Medea and get the shield. I jog to the iron gate.

I grip my weapons tight as I storm up the stone steps of the fortress. A hand on my arm stops me.

“I don’t know if you should go in there,” Raven says. “I feel my father’s power on the door.”

“You can’t go in alone, Raven. What if Medea is still in there?” I take another step.

“I think I need to do this and if Medea is in there, I’ll fight her.” Raven’s expression is determined.

Dax jogs up the steps, bruised and bloody. “I’ll go too. Safety in numbers, right?”

“Thanks, Dax. That would make me feel better.” I sigh.

“I don’t need a babysitter,” Raven grumbles.

“I’m Ares’ kid too and I’m not a babysitter. I’m watching your back.” Dax punches her lightly in the shoulder.

“Fine.” Raven turns and storms up the steps to the huge arched double doors that have an epic battle scene etched into them.

I plop down on the steps and watch them go up the stairs, hoping Medea isn’t in there waiting for them.

“Watch out,” Jayden roars.

I spin around to see that damn dragon warrior fucker lunging at me, but hellfire chains wrap around it and it explodes into ash which promptly covers my skin and I cough.

“Maybe that will finally kill the fucker.” I dust the ash off my pants but it’s no use anyway.

Another pair of jeans ruined with blood and ash. Not to mention the rips and holes in them.

Jayden jogs up and sits on the step next to me as we wait for Raven and Dax.

“Who do you think Medea is working for on this?”

“I honestly don’t know.” I run a hand down my face.

Worry eats away at my stomach the longer Raven and Dax are inside the temple.

“Why Michigan?” a deep voice asks, exacerbated.

I turn to Ares and shake my head. “Sparta was what we were told. Do you have any idea how many Spartas there are in the US?”

“Did you find my shield?” Ares raises a brow at me.

It strikes me how similar he and Hephaestus are. They both have huge muscles and olive skin, but just like the stories say, Hephaestus has more of an average human appearance than Ares. Neither one is bad to look at, but Ares is just more.

Stupid evil stepmonster. Couldn’t stand that her son looked human and threw him away. Even if I didn’t already hate her, I would hate her for that.

“Raven and Dax are inside getting it. They thought your magic would hurt anyone else.” I shrug.

“All warriors are allowed inside the temple of Ares. You are one of the greatest I have seen in a long time.” Ares nods to me.

A bloodcurdling scream blasts through the quiet and I’m on my feet in a second.
