Jayden storms over with his arms crossed over his chest. “Cerberus, these are my friends. Let them pass.”

Three heads shake back and forth and the dog snarls so loud it vibrates the ground.

“Got any ideas?” I ask Jayden.

“I don’t know why he’s acting like this. He’s a big goofy puppy to me.” Jayden sighs.

“You’re Hades’ son; that’s why he’s like that with you.” I take a step back. The dog snarls like it wants to chase me.

Should I run? Maybe I can outrun the dog and get to the gate before he does.

“Beth, what are you doing?” Raven asks as I bounce on the balls of my feet.

“I think I may be able to outrun him.” I glance between them.

“You think that’s a great idea to have a predator chase you around the underworld?” Raven asks with a snort.

“You have a better idea?” I ask, scanning the area.

There’s a stalagmite about fifty feet away that I can hide behind, but what about the others?

“No,” Raven says, chewing her lip.

“I’ll distract him and you guys run to the gate.” I bounce on the balls of my feet.

“Why do you always think you need to be the distraction?” Jayden growls angrily.

“You can’t exactly distract him. He will let you go in.” I glare at him.

He can shove it. He’s had it easy this whole time when it comes to being allowed entrance.

“I’m doing this, Jayden, so just get out of my way.” I cross my arms, glaring at him.

Cerberus snarls at my tone and posture. It looks like the giant dog doesn’t like the way I’m talking to his buddy. Oh, well. He can deal with it.

“You guys ready to run?” I ask, eyeing Raven and Adrian.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Adrian asks, running a hand through his hair.

“Nope, but it’s the only one I’ve got.” I shrug.

I grip my whip and make sure to keep my magic locked down. I don’t want to use my magic and actually hurt the giant puppy.

“What are you doing with that?” Jayden asks, eyeing my whip.

“I’m not using my magic; it’s just incentive to keep his eyes on me,” I say.

He really thinks after the way he interacted with the big beastie that I would use my magic on him? He doesn’t know me at all. Asshole.

Jayden nods but his eyes are still troubled. He really cares about the big beast. It’s freaking adorable.

I bounce on the balls of my feet as the others move away from me.

“Here, puppy,” I say, waving my arm in the air. “That’s a good puppy.”

All three heads tilt to the side as if trying to figure me out.

Yeah, it’s going to take a lot more than a head tilt to figure me out. Even for a millennia-old beast.
