“Exactly why I need to go,” he complains.
“I’m not going anywhere with you,” Jayden shouts.
Rebecca holds up a hand. “That’s enough. This is Jayden’s father’s domain so if he doesn’t want you to go, I have to agree with him that you going would be an extremely bad idea. They need to focus on the task at hand and not bickering.”
“This isn’t fair. I’m constantly getting left behind, but my sister gets to go.” He clenches his fists in frustration.
Raven stiffens at my side. “Stop throwing a tantrum like a spoiled child, and if you start spouting that bullshit about being stronger again, I will show you how strong I fucking am.”
“Raven, language.” Rebecca sighs, covering her eyes, exasperated.
“Sorry, Headmistress.” She ducks her head.
“Okay, so you four will be going to the underworld?” Rebecca asks, probably just to confirm she heard correctly.
Dax shouts angrily and stomps off, being the petulant child that Raven accused him of being only moments ago.
“Yes, we need to help Hades find his lost helm,” I say. Everyone nods.
“You also may come across some new monsters. I’m not sure if the wards are set to keep demons out or not.” Jayden scrubs a hand over his face.
“We have them set for anything that wants to do us harm,” Rebecca confirms.
Good. I sigh in relief that we won’t come back to an ugly battle this time. We still have no idea the kinds of things we will face in the underworld though.
“That’s one less thing to worry about. Now we just have to make sure we stop more from getting out,” I grumble.
“We can’t stop them for real until we get the helm back for my father.” Jayden eyes me.
“I know. We need to leave as soon as possible.” My legs are itching to move. To leave and get this over with before everything gets destroyed.
“Agreed. Do you have supplies? Enough food to last you through the underworld? You can’t eat anything from there,” Rebecca asks with concern.
“We have everything in the car,” Jayden says with a nod.
“You got past the harpies?” She raises a brow, impressed.
“They are creatures of the underworld.” Jayden shrugs.
Rebecca nods thoughtfully. I scan the room, still antsy. We need to go before it’s too late.
“Can we go?” I ask impatiently. “We only have maybe a week before all hell breaks loose, literally.”
Raven giggles at my play on words but no one else is laughing. This is serious. The underworld could collapse completely.
What happens to humanity if there is no afterlife? Do they become like Orpheus, not really living but unable to die?
Rebecca glances at my fidgeting hands. “Yes, go. You have a pass.”
I don’t wait for further confirmation. I call out, “Thank you,” as I spin around and head for the door.
I don’t look back, already knowing that the others are following me. Raven jogs up next to me. “Beth, I’m worried.”
“What is it?” I ask.
“The pack. They are in LA. Do you think we can make a quick detour to check on Greyson and warn them about the demons?” She glances away at her words.
We are in a hurry to help Hades but she’s right about warning Greyson. I turn to Jayden. “What do you think about stopping by Greyson’s to tell him what’s happening?”
