“Jayden,” I warn again, but he’s so lost in his anger he doesn’t respond.
Why is he acting like this? He doesn’t even like me. This reaction seems over the top for him for it to just be about me.
The chains tighten and jerk Draven up to the ceiling. Jayden’s eyes are black, the crystal-blue irises completely gone.
“Raven, we need to do something,” I say, nudging her and pointing down at the liquid shadows inching toward the other students.
“Fucking hell. What is that?” she asks, terrified.
“I don’t know, but I think we need to get everyone to back up. Jayden doesn’t even seem to notice he’s doing it.” I chew my lip.
Raven runs to the other side of the large circle we are in the middle of and starts yelling at people, but they are too transfixed on the drama happening.
Jayden vibrates with rage. “You think it’s okay to corner women and try to kiss them when they tell you to stop?”
Draven chokes out a gasp but doesn’t answer. He can’t with the chains around his throat.
“Answer me,” Jayden roars and the chains jerk, slamming him into the ceiling.
“Jayden, he can’t speak with the chain around his throat. You need to calm down.” I take a step toward him and the liquid smoke retreats from me, so I take another and it parts for me.
Odd. His weird shadows don’t seem to want to hurt me, but it makes it easier for me to get to him. I reach out a hand and rub it over his stiff back.
The muscles jump beneath my touch before relaxing just slightly. “Jayden, he’s not worth it.”
He turns and his black eyes stare into mine before his arms wrap around me and he smashes his lips against mine.
Shocked, I don’t react immediately, but when he presses fully against me, I wrap my arms around his neck and lean into the kiss.
A thud has us breaking apart, and his eyes shine blue again and widen. He steps back, dropping his arms to his sides, and shakes his head. He turns abruptly to Draven.
“That’s what it looks like when someone actually wants to kiss you. Fuck with her again like that and what I did to Dax will look like child’s play,” Jayden roars.
Draven is in a heap on the floor, staring up at me with hurt in his eyes. Too bad for him. He shouldn’t have cornered me. I told him to stop. He should have fucking stopped.
The cafeteria is silent as everyone stares at us. Well, fuck, that’s embarrassing. A mountain of a man pushes through the crowd, and I sigh.
I really don’t want to deal with Dax this morning too. I haven’t even gotten to finish my breakfast. “I need to start drinking coffee to deal with this shit.”
Raven steps next to me, giggling at my mumbled words. “Did you expect anything less from Dax after that kiss?”
“What the hell, Beth?” Dax says as he stomps up to me.
“What, Dax?” I sigh, running a hand over my face.
“You let Jayden just grab you and kiss you like that but claim you didn’t want me to kiss you after the battle?” He crosses his arms, glaring down at me.
“It’s not a claim, Dax. It’s the truth and what do you care if I let Jayden kiss me?” I place my hands on my hips and step toward him.
He’s well over a foot taller than me, and my attempt to look intimidating falls flat, but my words strike the nerve I want them to.
Maybe I am heartless for telling him like this in front of everyone, but I have had enough. I can’t even eat breakfast without people doing crazy shit. It’s fucking exhausting.
“I think you would change your mind if you spent more time with me,” he mumbles.
I groan. He’s not getting the hint about this at all. “I have to go eat or I’m going to be late for class.”
I spin on my heel, Raven right at my side.
