“I’m the only child of Zeus. No one can get into my dorm if I’m not there.”
Our dorms have special magical locks that refuse entry to anyone other than the child of that particular god unless they are in the room.
“That’s actually pretty smart.” Adrian nods.
Raven threads her arm through mine with a grin. “We’ll meet you at the cafeteria after we drop these off.”
We stride out the double doors of the admin building, and I stop. It’s raining. “Shit.”
I back up into the doorway and stare up at the sky. Raven frowns and turns back to me before her eyes widen in realization.
“Maybe it’s a good time to find out if your magic has grown?” She nods to the cloudy sky.
I’m able to control the weather sometimes, but it’s mostly just lightning. “What do you suggest I do, Raven? I hardly think that lightning will solve the problem.”
“Try to see if you can control where the rain hits. I’ll stand out there and you try to make the rain stop above my head.” She shrugs like what she’s suggesting is totally possible.
“Fine.” I sigh and focus on my magic just below the surface as Raven steps into the rain. I stare up at the sky as static covers my arms and legs.
Sweat beads on my forehead, but Raven just keeps getting soaked. Lightning flashes in the sky, lighting up the dreary evening sky.
“It’s not working,” I huff.
“You got this. Just keep trying,” Raven shouts over a crash of thunder.
She holds her arms out and spins around like a little kid playing in the rain.
I shake my head and focus on the clouds, willing them to obey me and part above Raven’s head. Thunder rattles the windows of the admin building again.
Closing my eyes against the onslaught, I imagine the clouds parting and letting the sun peek through.
“Oh my gods,” Raven whoops.
I open my eyes and gulp at the sky. The clouds are parted in a clear line from here to the dorms and the sun peeks out between the clouds.
“C’mon, hurry. I don’t know how long I can hold it.” I grab Raven’s arm, tugging her along behind me.
We run through the quad, dodging groups of students milling about, and make it to the dorms just before I let the clouds move back into the natural position.
“That was so cool.” Raven claps my shoulder hard.
“Ow,” I whine, pushing her away toward the stairs.
“Sorry, still getting used to the added strength.” She winces.
“Then just don’t hit me until you do. That fucking hurts.” I roll my shoulder back and follow her up the stairs.
The climb is hard and I never understood why there is no elevator for students on the upper floors but with as much physical training as we do, I’m not exactly surprised I’m not even out of breath when I put my hand on the doorknob to my room and push it open.
“What if it’s still raining after dinner?” Raven asks as I open my closet door and set the book and map on the top shelf in the back and put some junk in front of them.
“We can just come up here, I guess.” I shrug.
Raven flops on my bed and raises a brow at me. “You would let Jayden in here?”
“If it means protecting that book, yeah. I’ll get over it. Cross left it in my care. I’m not going to let it get ruined.” I cross over to my desk chair and sit down, resting my elbows on my knees and my head in my hands.
“You okay?” she asks and I turn my head in her direction.
