His friends look at him skeptically.

“No matter how much they pretend to hate each other, Beth and Jayden like each other. You don’t stand a chance,” one boy says, shaking his head.

I turn to Raven who rolls her eyes. “He’s seriously delusional,” she whispers.

I nod because it’s all I can do. Are these people seriously sitting here gossiping about me? Draven thinks he has a shot. It’s stupid.

“What about that kiss between her and Dax? That was intense,” another kid from the group of idiots adds.

Wow, just wow.

Draven scoffs, “That kiss was unwanted at best. She shoved him away a second after it happened. I’m telling you I have the best shot with her.”

“Do you really, Draven?” I ask loudly. “I would guess you have no chance, considering you’re over here gossiping with your friends about me.”

“Beth?” He spins around, his face paling as he sees me standing behind him with my hands on my hips.

I want nothing more than to slap him and walk away, but I have a reason for being here. I grit my teeth as he jumps to his feet.

“It’s not like that.” He reaches for me and I back away.

Raven takes a step in front of me, clenching her fists at her sides like she wants to punch him, but I put a hand on her shoulder. I don’t need her to defend me.

“Yeah, it’s exactly like that. We were standing behind you for a good five minutes, and if I didn’t need your help with something, I would tell you to fuck off and walk away.” I glare at the idiot.

“You need my help?” he asks hopefully, taking another step forward.

I hold up a hand for him to stop. I am not letting this creep near me again. I thought Dax was bad, but he’s just like a lost puppy.

Raven bumps me with her elbow. “We could just ask a different Hermes student who was abducted. They might recognize it and be able to help.”

“What? No. I’m the best option.” Draven pleads with his eyes.

“That is a good point.” I shrug and turn to leave. Draven grabs my arm and I growl. “Do not touch me without my permission.”

He removes his hand as if I burned him. Damn, I should have zapped his hand off my arm. That definitely would have made me feel better.

“I’m sorry. I won’t touch you, but what were you talking about? What magic?” he calls, and I stop in my tracks.

I turn to Draven with a scowl. “It’s Cross. He has a saltwater lake outside his cottage and that’s why he’s drained. Someone used magic to drain his power source here.”

“What?” he asks, shocked. “You want me to see if I can counter the magic?”

He’s more curious than anything now. I raise an eyebrow at him. “If you can, but we figured you might recognize the magic. It’s familiar but I can’t place it.”

“I’ll check it out before classes tomorrow, but the staff cottages are off-limits.” He chews his lip.

“You have a pass from Rebecca. She asked us to let you know.” I wave him off and turn my back on him before striding to the dorms with Raven to the sound of his friends laughing at him over my shoulder.

Good. He could use a little public humiliation for the things he was saying to his friends.

“I would have dick punched him.” Raven shakes her head.

I burst out laughing. “I should have let you. I would pay to see that.”

We stroll to the dorms and I scan the crowds, but Jayden is nowhere to be found. Shrugging, I take the steps with Raven two at a time and we part on her floor. I take the rest all the way up to my floor and sigh when I get into my dorm.

Each floor is for the child of a certain god so because I am the only child of Zeus, I have the top floor all to myself. It’s perfect since I’m used to having my privacy.
