“Now, why would you want to leave? You have everything you could ever want here, no?” Kate asks conversationally, but her eyes tell a different story.

There’s a reason she wants us to stay.

My hands flare with electricity as realization dawns on me. “You know about our mission. This whole hotel is here to stop us from saving the academy.”

Taking a step away from the woman who I can only guess is a goddess, I catch movement from the corner of my eye.

Jayden’s shadows are swirling, and Raven has her twin blades in her hands.

Greyson’s eyes are glowing, his hands turning to claws.

Huh? I haven’t seen him do that before.

The woman tsks us lightly. “Should have realized the four of you would be too smart for your own good. Bravo for figuring it out, Bethany. Now can you figure out who I am?”

Her laugh tinkles through the space.

“Hekate,” Raven says on a breath, her eyes widening. “Goddess of magic. We should have figured it out by the name of the hotel.”

I throw my hands up in the air. “I told you there was something weird about this place, but do you guys ever listen?”

Jayden groans. “We get it, Beth, but now isn’t really the time for ‘I told you sos.’”

“Sorry, Hekate, but we can’t stay here. There are lives at stake, and we need to go.” I take a step to the side, but Frank blocks my path once again.

“And forgive me, but I can’t let you save the academy or help Zeus find his spark. I have an old friend of yours who’s been dying to see you.” She giggles at the end, and my body locks up tight, electricity buzzing beneath my skin.

Has Hekate been the one bringing the monsters back?

Raven glares at her. “You don’t know any of our friends.”

A roar fills the room.

Stomping feet come through the front door to the hotel.

“Why the fuck can’t you just stay dead?” I yell, pulling my sword as I look at the ten-foot-tall Minotaur. “How many times do we have to kill you before you actually stay dead?”

Raven groans next to me, and Greyson’s face pales in shock. The last time we fought the Minotaur, Greyson was pretty badly injured.

“You can stay back, Greyson. No one will think less of you, I promise,” Jayden says, clapping him on the shoulder.

Greyson grunts. “No, I owe that bastard a proper death.”

“I don’t think shifting is going to help much with him.” I widen my stance, waiting for big ugly to charge us.

He’s always got the same MO no matter how many times we kill him. He uses the same old tricks each and every time.

Hekate rubs her hands together. “Oh, this is going to be fun to watch. Do you know how long it’s been since I watched heroes fight an actual monster?”

“Millennia, mistress.” Frank grins, and the sight is super creepy.

Little do they know that we are fierce, and all the Minotaur is looking for is yet another death.

“Spread out,” I tell the others, even though we all know who the damn monster is going to charge.

Me. It’s always me.

“Zeus,” the Minotaur grunts.
