“We need to get Jayden to medical, but I can only use one arm.” I chew my lip, trying to figure out how we’re going to get him out of here.
I brush my fingers over his cool forehead. It’s sticky with blood.
Jayden groans. “Beth.”
“Jayden, are you okay? Can you walk?”
He struggles to sit up but falls back down, dragging me with him.
“Is it dead? How’s your shoulder?” He blinks, his eyes dazed.
“Raven got it. I’m more concerned about your head. You may have a concussion. Does anything else hurt?” I ask, checking him over with my one good hand.
“Everything hurts.” His eyes close, but I smack his cheek lightly.
“No, you need to stay awake. Raven, help me get him up.”
Raven crouches next to me and grabs one of Jayden’s arms.
“Why do you even care? You hate me,” Jayden mumbles.
I wrap his arm around my shoulder, grimacing when his hand hits my shredded skin. He’s heavy, but Raven is actually taking most of his weight, which I’m thankful for. She’s the only one of us not injured.
It’s a long walk through the forest while practically carrying a two-hundred-pound jackass.
“I don’t wish you death, Jayden.” I don’t tell him I don’t hate him because that will give him hope where there is none.
To his credit, he tries to walk, but he’s dragging his feet more than anything.
The tall buildings come into view the second we step through the tree line.
One of Raven’s half brothers comes running up with a huge ax in his hand. “Is it dead?”
“Yeah, I got it. Are you stupid, Dax? That wouldn’t have even touched it.” Raven rolls her eyes. “Why don’t you help us get him to medical? He’s heavy as fuck.”
“Not nice,” Jayden mumbles.
“She’s not being mean, just telling the truth.” I shift my weight, and pain slices through me again. I flinch.
“Looks like you both need medical. Here, I’ll take him.” The big man reaches out and throws Jayden over his shoulder, much to Jayden’s disgust.
He curses Dax out.
Raven bursts out laughing as Jayden is carried off by her brother. “I wish we were allowed to have phones because what I wouldn’t give to have that picture to hold over his head for eternity.”
“I know.” I giggle as we make our way to the medical building, following along behind Dax and a screaming Jayden.
“He really is being a big baby,” I say as we walk up the stone steps to medical.
The healers see us coming and rush over to us. One takes Jayden from a grinning Dax.
“I have always disliked that guy, so getting to piss him off so royally just made my day.” Dax chuckles. “You need a healer too.”
He grimaces at my bloody arm and then scans the room for a healer. He grabs my good arm, drags me to one of the gurneys, picks me up like a rag doll, and puts me on the bed.
“Hey, jackass. No manhandling my bestie.” Raven pushes Dax away from me.
Dax winks at me and backs away with his hands up.
