He tries to put his arm around Raven, but she shakes him off and stomps out of the cave. I follow close behind her.

It’s going to be a long, silent drive in the car with both of us pissed at the guys.

“Wait, babe, why are you mad? I was enchanted,” Greyson yells as he skulks behind us.

“You should have fought it. Not me. You pinned me to the back seat of the car when I was trying to save you. You’re a big dumb jerk. This world is fucking dangerous, and you just walked into a fucking siren’s den and let one rub all over you.”

Jayden doesn’t say a word. He’s used to me being pissed at him. I just hope he knows that kiss didn’t change anything.

We’re still not together; it was the only way I could think to break the siren’s hold on him.

We’re halfway to the car when the Nereid from before pops up out of nowhere.

“You did it?” she asks hopefully, and I nod.

“The sirens are dead, but like I said, we can’t promise they will stay dead. But you have some peace for now anyway.” My smile is faint, exhaustion tugging at me.

“Thank you so much.” She grins, seeming relieved.

I don’t blame her. That place reeks, and I wouldn’t want that shit in my home either.

I pat her shoulder. “You’re welcome. We needed to get our friends away from them too.”

“I have a gift for you.” She hands me a large conch shell. “You can call to anyone with that. Just speak their name into it, and you can talk to them.”

“Like a cell phone.” I grin.

Confusion crosses her features.

“It’s a human device we use to talk to people. This is a very generous gift. Thank you.”

Her pale blue skin turns a bit pink as she blushes. “You saved my home. It’s the least I can do.”

“C’mon, Beth, we need to go,” Raven shouts, and I nod to the Nereid before walking back to the car. “Let the idiots sit up front, and sit in the back with me.”

She must be monumentally pissed at Greyson if she doesn’t want to sit with him.

We can’t fracture right now though. We have no idea what’s ahead for us, and we need to be a team.

So, maybe I should stop being so hard on Jayden.

We could very possibly die on this mission. Will I have regrets regarding Jayden if that happens?

I really don’t want to think about that.

“That thing is creeping me out.” I blink at the bronze statue. “Did its eyes just move?”

The bronze statue is of a man with a guitar at his feet. He has a sign over his head, and I frown. It doesn’t make the fact that his eyes seem to follow me any less creepy.

We made it to Winslow, Arizona, and decided to find somewhere to get some food before driving any longer.

We are all exhausted, but considering it’s taken a day for us to get through California and Arizona, none of us are willing to take much more time.

It should not take this long to get across those two states, but every time we stop, something bad happens.

The statue staring at me does not bode well for this stop either.
