“Shit, that’s the dragon.” I turn my head to look out the back window. “How do the humans not see a giant white dragon with a hundred heads running toward us?”

It really doesn’t make sense.

Greyson shrugs. “They probably think they have random earthquakes.”

That is the human way, I guess. They always have an explanation for the unexplainable.

“You know, we probably look really guilty going this way,” Jayden says as he speeds up a bit more.

“We need to go faster,” Raven yells, completely turned in her seat to see the dragon. “That fucker is huge and fast and gaining on us.”

“I have an idea,” Jayden shouts. “Do you trust me?”

“Not at all, but if you think it will get us out of this with the car and us intact, I’m all for it.” I grin, letting him know I’m kidding… Kind of.

I trust his strategic brain. I just don’t trust him with my heart, but even that conviction is being chipped away day by day.

Fucking stupid Jayden. Why can’t I keep hating him? It’s not fair.

“Okay, hang on tight,” He instructs.

I grab the oh-shit handle and brace myself for something really stupid.

I’m not wrong. Jayden throws the car into reverse and hits the gas as hard as he can, sending us hurtling toward the giant fucking dragon.

“What the fuck, Jayden?” Raven yells.

One of its heads comes down practically on top of us, but Jayden swerves, missing getting us crushed by inches.

Another head tries to swipe us from the side but ends up crashing into the head that missed us from above.

The eyes blink as if they’re dazed, and a roar rattles the windows while the dragon starts stomping around randomly in circles.

“We need to get out from under this thing before it stomps us flat,” Greyson barks, holding on to Raven.

“What if the thing just decides to sit down, Jayden?” I screech. “We’ll be flat. We need to get out from under it.”

Yes, I just screeched. It’s not something I’m proud of, but we are currently driving under a hundred-headed dragon trying to eat us, so don’t judge me.

“It’s a guardian.” Jayden tries to calm me, but it doesn’t help. “It’s not just gonna sit down in the middle of protecting what it was created to protect.”

“It’s just a monster, Beth,” Raven says. “I don’t think it’s enough of a critical thinker to understand that if it sits, it will crush us.”

She’s not wrong. Monsters are not the brightest, except maybe the sphynx, but saying that shit out loud is tempting the fates, and that is the last thing we want. Why the hell would she say that?

I reach out, trying to smack a hand over her mouth, but she’s too far away in the back seat.

Instead, Greyson slaps his hand over her mouth. “Don’t speak that shit out into the universe, babe.”

“What? I’m not wrong.” Raven’s words are muffled through Greyson’s hand.

Greyson moves it away from her mouth and wipes it on his jeans.

“I’ll give you something to lick,” Greyson whispers.

“Did you just lick his hand?” I giggle, and it dissipates some of the tension.

Raven nods, her cheeks heating in embarrassment.
