Shifting from foot to foot, I glance up into his green eyes. “Thank you, Draven. I hate to say it, but I don’t think this is the last time we will need you guys to reinforce these. Maybe just make sure you have some of us or an Ares kid with you if you have to come back here.”
He runs a hand through his hair. “That’s an excellent suggestion. I’ll make sure to let my siblings know that we should always have an escort when we come out here. I don’t want any more of them to go missing.”
It may get worse before it gets better, but at least now we have an idea about what is happening and a plan to stop it. Hopefully.

“Beth, stop,” Jayden yells from behind me and grabs my arm.
I can’t stop the growl from escaping. I have told him repeatedly not to touch me.
My magic crackles at my fingertips. I’m still not amazing with control, and sometimes when my emotions are high, accidents happen.
I don’t think I will care if I accidentally shock Jayden again. The guy has no boundaries and doesn’t understand words apparently.
“What?” I yank my arm free and spin to face him, putting my hands on my hips.
He slowly puts his hands in the air, letting me know he means no harm, and takes a step back. “Your leg is bleeding.”
“Shit, I don’t have fucking time for this.” I hobble over to a fallen log and sit down, then grab the little jar out of my bag with shaking hands.
I hate blood, and that has never stopped. I have just gotten better at dealing with it, but the burning in my leg now is making it harder to handle.
“Give me that.” Dax holds out his hand for the cream.
I eye him warily as I open the jar. Do I really want his hands on me? He’s gorgeous but not my type.
I glance at Jayden from the corner of my eye. How will he react if I let Dax rub the cream on my leg? He is clearly a jealous, possessive jerk.
He has absolutely no right to be jealous.
The blood on my calf is barely trickling down my leg, and I grimace and hand the jar to Dax.
A low rumble fills the air.
I glare at Jayden. He doesn’t get to be a possessive asshole. I’m over all this. I just want to find the headmistress and tell her about the wards and the students.
“You’ll let him help you but not me?” Jayden’s eyes glow blue.
“He didn’t lead me on and break my trust.” Raising my eyebrow at Jayden, I move my leg onto Dax’s lap so he can put the cream on it easier.
I do a mental facepalm when I realize what I just said.
I let Raven and Dax in on how badly Jayden had hurt me. This is going to be a fun conversation.
Shit.
I have refused for months to reveal even to my best friend what happened with Jayden on the way here and why I won’t give him the time of day.
Dax’s eyes snap up to mine and widen at the expression on my face. He shakes his head and dips his fingers into the cream.
Then he whistles low. “You are a stupid man.”
“That’s not what happened, and you know it.” Jayden scrubs a hand over his close-cropped hair.
“Do I really, Jayden? Tell me what happened, then. Because from where I am sitting, you had a girlfriend and didn’t care what would happen when we got back here.” I wince as Dax rubs a little too hard on a particularly nasty burn.
He smiles sheepishly. “Sorry, I’ll try to be more careful.”
