“What did you want to tell me?” I ask softly.

I don’t meet his eyes, too nervous while having the first conversation of my life with my father.

“I am sorry about your mother.” He sighs. “If I could have intervened without hurting you even worse, I would have. The fates…”

I wave a hand, telling him to stop. I just saved a bunch of students and defeated the damn Hydra, and I refuse to let anyone see me cry.

“It’s fine. I get it now. It’s just going to take a while to get used to everything.” I shrug.

“I really do care about you, and I’m so proud. Things are going to get worse before they get better, but I hope this gift will help you in the coming trials,” he says and pats me on the shoulder.

He turns to the others and grimaces. “Now it’s time to go before it’s all too late.”

He claps his hands. That’s the last I see of him before the world spins around me as he transports us through space and time. When my feet finally hit the ground in the familiar forest, I stumble and cough.

The sensation doesn’t seem to get any better the more I do it.

Once my ears stop ringing, shouting and the hiss and crackle of flames fill the air. Chaos ensues around me.

I crouch into a fighting stance.

Monsters are everywhere.

“Draven, is there a way for you to banish them out of the wards?” I yell as I duck away from a fireball coming at me.

“I’m not sure. There are so many of them.” He shakes his head, throwing magic at a lizard monster thing.

It shrieks before turning to dust.

Smoke billows from fires that dot the forest.

I call my whip while holding my sword in my left hand. “Okay, grab your siblings and spread out. We need to get the wards back up and kill these bastards.”

Draven nods before jogging to a group of students and barking orders at them.

Adrian is suddenly in front of me, pushing me to the side and making me stumble. He nocks an arrow and hits a monster in the eye, and it crumbles to dust.

“You’re finally here,” he comments.

“Yeah, thanks for that.” I nod to the dust that used to be the monster who would have gotten me from behind.

“Sure.” He winks.

What the fuck is with all these guys?

They have all lost their damn minds.

I shake my head, cracking my whip at another monster. It howls as electricity courses through it, and its body explodes into dust.

“Sick whip. Did Ares give it to you?”

“Yup, in Memphis. Thanks for the tip in Oklahoma. Artemis caused a huge fucking problem at the zoo, but she told us to go see Ares and gave us other information.”

The fact that we are having a casual conversation while in the middle of battling monsters is not lost on me.

I spin around, twirling the whip in an arc as I step away from Adrian. The monsters surrounding me all explode into dust.
