Focus, Beth.
“Okay, how do we get inside?” Jayden asks as I step away from him.
“We aren’t getting in there, Jayden. I’m going in alone.” I put my hands on my hips.
He’s not fucking getting this.
“You can’t go alone.” He reaches for me, probably to shake me, but I step away from him.
“You can’t go past the fucking electricity. I’ll find the spark and turn it off, and then you can storm in like a psychopath.” I shrug.
He opens his mouth to argue again, but I cut him off.
“The best thing you can do is have my back as I get to the cave. Do you have my back, or am I too reckless for that?” I stomp away to the edge of the trees.
“Fuck, Beth, I didn’t mean that.” His eyes are sad, but I don’t have the time or patience to deal with him right now.
“Do you have my back? No matter what?” I ask again with a raised brow.
He huffs out a breath. “You know I always have your back.”
“No, sometimes it really doesn’t feel like you do, Jayden.” He’s an overbearing ass most of the time who tries to fight my battles for me instead ofwithme.
That’s not the kind of partner I need.
Shaking my head, I continue my swift pace through the trees.
The electricity in the cave sizzles against my skin, practically calling me to its mouth. The blue glow makes Jayden’s face look ghostly as I turn to him.
Where are Raven and Greyson?
I hope they’re both okay.
I chew my lip at the thought, but the best way to find out they’re good is to finish this.
“Once I’m inside, find Raven and Greyson and make sure they’re okay. As soon as I have the spark, the electricity should stop.”
“You have no idea what awaits inside for you, Beth. Let me take a chance and go in with you.”
I’m shaking my head before he even finishes his sentence.
I may be hurt by his words, but the thought of him dying breaks me open with an uncomfortable tightness in my chest and makes my stomach drop.
“No, I won’t risk any of you. I’ve got this.” I infuse my tone with a bravado I don’t completely feel, stepping toward the energy.
I tighten my grip on my whip and hold my necklace with my free hand. I have to believe this will work for me.
When I make it to the tree line, I see just how close I am. The only problem is that there are about fifty feet and no cover.
If I’m going to make it, I need to run fast and hope the wind doesn’t shift. If the Empusas smell me, then it’s all over.
“I could shadow you over there.” Jayden’s voice is quiet.
I shake my head. “Can’t you feel the electricity? I don’t trust it not to electrocute you. I got this.”
I chew my lip and take a huge breath as I crouch into a runner’s stance.
“Be careful. I’ll cover you.” He squeezes my shoulder, and I nod, resolute.
