A howl pierces the air, and I flinch.

“Shit, Greyson. We’re trying to be quiet,” I whisper angrily at the wolf.

He whines and ducks his head.

Jayden’s hand sears my back as he pushes me forward. We need to move, but Greyson stops and turns with a growl. His knuckles are metallic claws on his front paws.

“Go, Beth,” Raven shouts.

She’s gripping her ax so hard that her knuckles are white.

“Fuck no. We’re not leaving you to battle all these monsters alone,” I whisper, back glaring at her.

Jayden taps on my shoulder and urges me forward, but I dig in my heels.

“We need to go, Beth. They will hold them off,” he says urgently.

I scoff. How are the two of them going to hold off all those monsters? They will be killed.

Raven’s eyes burn with determination. “We’ve got this. You get to the spark and get the Hermes kids before it’s too late.”

Breaking away from Jayden, I rush Raven and hug her hard. I don’t want to leave her. Splitting up seems like a horrible idea.

My gut roils as Raven hugs me back.

“You better not fucking die, or I’m going to the underworld and dragging you back.” I lean away to look into her eyes.

“I’m not fucking going anywhere. Now go.” She shoves me toward Jayden. “Get out of here now.”

Jayden glares at Raven, and something silent passes between them because he nods and grabs my arm.

A collective roar fills the valley, and the ground shakes, dislodging pebbles and dust beneath my feet.

They are coming for us. We may not make it out of this alive.

“Wraith,” I scream.

Fog billows around my feet and quickly fills the space, cutting me off from my friends.

Jayden’s hand disappears from my back. I stumble to the side, scanning the fog for any clue as to where the wraith or my friends are, but the fog is so thick I can only see a foot in front of me.

A bony black finger points at me from out of the fog. I lash out with my whip. The wraith hisses at me, drawing their hand back, but I lash out again.

“Zeus,” the wraith hisses.

The fog clears some, but I still can’t see anything. My friends are nowhere to be seen.

I don’t dare call out for them in case it distracts them. I just need to get to the cave so we can get some help here.

I crack the whip at the fog. It sizzles with my power.

A thought occurs to me, and I call on my magic. The sky rumbles. I can imagine that over the fog, the sky’s growing dark and charged with electricity.

I just hope Raven and the guys don’t get hit with it.

Rain pelts my skin, clearing more of the fog, and the wraith screeches only feet away from me.
