She sighs. “We need to work together.”
She frowns, annoyed. Her brows arched down and her hands clench on her lap.
“You’remad at me too?” I yell, throwing my hands up in frustration. “He said the reason we have taken down most of the monsters is because we’re reckless, Raven.”
“What the fuck? I knew he said something stupid, but that was beyond dumb.” She huffs out a breath and takes a seat next to me on the rock.
“See why I am pissed?” I growl. “He will never see me as an equal, just a reckless female who needs to be protected even though I have saved his ass many times.”
“Guys are stupid. We are both clearly powerful, yet they act like we’re children.” Raven shakes her head. “But fighting like this when we are so close to our goal doesn’t help anything either.”
“I’m not fighting. I just walked away. I’m over it. It feels like every time things get to a good place with him, he proves that he’s a jackass who’s not capable of change.”
That’s the worst part for me.
How can I trust him if he doesn’t trust me? Saying I’m reckless isn’t very promising.
“Well, I convinced the guys to let us take first watch together so everyone can cool down.” Raven leans back on her elbows.
“That’s what started this argument. I thought we would all be distracted and not actually keep a lookout, and he started with his overprotective bullshit. I hope he is over there awake thinking about how badly he fucked up.”
“We all need to be rested for tomorrow. I know you don’t mean that.” Raven bumps my shoulder, and I sigh.
“No, I don’t. We have to find them tomorrow, Raven. I don’t know how much longer they can hold on. Adrian didn’t sound good. He was shooting arrows at something. Something was attacking them. We need to get them back before all is lost.”
“We will do our best. That’s all we can do.” Raven sighs.
“I know,” I say with a sigh, “but what if our best isn’t good enough?”
27
“We have been going north since dawn, and I still haven’t felt any kind of magic,” I grumble.
I’m not in a great mood. I didn’t get much sleep last night, even when Raven and I switched watch with the guys.
“I think we’re getting closer.” Raven tries to placate me, but it’s not working. “Look at all the rocks and things in the distance. If there is going to be a cave, it will be there, right?”
A shrub wraps a vine around my ankle, tripping me, and I nearly stumble.
“Ow, shit.” I bat it away.
What the fuck?
“Are you okay, B?” Raven eyes me.
“Do the trees seem overly hostile to you?” I whisper so the dryads don’t hear.
I know there have to be dryads, and there’s definitely a reason this shit keeps happening.
The rocky patches are still pretty far away, and I keep getting tree branches to the face, scratching at my arms, and tripping at my feet.
It’s almost like they’re reaching out for me specifically. It only adds to my bad mood.
“How long are you going to make him suffer?” Raven whispers to me, and I glare at her.
She shrugs.
What the hell? Talk about a complete change of subject. What the hell? What does she think is going on here?
