We are being watched.
“Where the fuck did it go?” Jayden whispers.
Raven shudders. “I don’t know, but whatever it is, it’s watching us.”
I touch the lightning bolt on my necklace, and the whip appears in my hand, crackling with electricity. I don’t think I will ever get used to that little trick.
We move as a unit to the cave when the trees behind it rustle. I jump back.
What the fuck is that?
I peer at the top of the trees, and two brown eyes stare back at me with hunger. Now that I have seen the eyes, it’s easier to decipher the absolute mountain of a monster in front of me.
“Fuck, it’s a giant,” I yell, jumping back.
The others scramble away and stare up at the monster.
It’s humanoid in appearance but has the scaled skin of a snake, so it’s not a dragon. We learned briefly about giants in ancient history, but seeing the thirty-foot man thing is completely different.
“Spread out,” Raven shouts, and we all back farther away from each other. Raven reaches behind her and pulls her ax from her back. “Greyson, go for the crowns. We’ll hold it off.”
“I think it’s better if I shift,” he growls, glaring at her.
Jayden has his shield out in front of him and his obsidian blade in his other hand.
“If you two don’t quit arguing, we are going to have a problem,” he scolds.
The giant roars and shakes the trees as it stomps forward, nearly taking me off my feet. It grips a tree, uproots it, and launches it at us.
I dive to the side, tackling Jayden. We barely miss the tree before it falls off the cliff behind us.
“Thanks.” Jayden grins. “But I have my shadows. Don’t put yourself in danger for me.”
“Fuck off, Jayden.” I grip my whip tighter and jump to my feet.
A giant scaled foot is now blocking the cave. I scan the area, not seeing Greyson anywhere. Raven is next to the giant’s foot, swinging the ax at it and making it roar again.
“Where’s Greyson?” I shout.
“I hope he’s in the cave because the alternative is unacceptable,” she growls, hacking at it again.
The monster attempts to stomp on Raven, but she rolls away.
Greyson is on the ground just inside the cave, but he isn’t moving.
“Jayden,” I yell, pointing at Greyson on the ground. I hope to the gods he’s still alive. “Go help him.”
Jayden’s eyes widen. He lashes at the foot that’s trying to stomp on him but makes it to the cave just before the giant puts its foot down in front of the cave’s mouth, trapping them inside.
Suddenly, my whip doesn’t seem as effective as I think it is. It’s small and insignificant compared to the massive giant. Electricity buzzes through me and into the whip, and the giant’s eyes snap to me.
His giant hand reaches down, but when I crack the whip against its palm, it rears back with a grunt.
Okay, so not completely useless.
The stench of burning skin fills the space.
The giant bellows, and Raven stumbles as she hacks at its foot again.
