Greyson shrugs, still studying the compass in his hand. “He did say to go north. That mountain is north.”

Jayden stares straight ahead at the mountain. “I think me and Greyson would be the best to scale the mountain. I can use my shadows, and Greyson as a wolf has the best agility.”

I put my hands on my hips, glaring at him. “Hell no. We aren’t splitting up. That didn’t work out so well the last time.”

“We aren’t weak females, Jayden. We are demigods just like you,” Raven shouts, taking a step toward him with her hands balled into fists.

Greyson wraps his arms around her, halting her.

Jayden shakes his head. “I know you aren’t. It doesn’t mean I don’t want to protect you both.”

“It’s not necessary,” I growl and stomp forward.

We are doing this together.

I take the pack off my shoulders and place it on the ground in front of me before opening it and pulling out the climbing gear.

I peer up at the intimidating mountain and grimace.

“How are we doing this?” I ask.

“Should we look for a trail or just climb?” Raven asks, crossing her arms over her chest.

I shrug. “I’m not excited about climbing, but I don’t want to waste any time looking for things that aren’t there.”

Jayden tugs at the straps of my harness and glances at me with fear in his eyes.

“Are you sure you don’t at least want to look for a trail?” Jayden asks warily.

“I’m sure.” I nod and blow out a breath.

I have never been climbing before, so what if I suck at it and fall on my face?

The alternative is even worse though.

Every minute we delay, the academy suffers.

They get closer to total destruction, and we are the only ones who can help.

The faster we get to the crowns, the faster we get to the Hermes kids.

I just hope we aren’t too late to save the academy.

“Fuck,” I shout as I lose my grip on the rock above me.

It crumbles, spraying me with dust and pebbles.

“Beth? Are you okay?” Jayden yells.

I hang there for a second before finally finding a good handhold and pulling myself up.

“I’m fine. I just slipped. Keep going.” I scan the rocks in front of me for another handhold.

“Fuck this,” Jayden grumbles. “When we get to the next ledge, I’m going to start shadowing us to the cliff.”

“I didn’t think you could shadow to a place you’ve never been before,” Greyson calls.
