“I’m sorry you had to see that, Annie. You’re so little. That’s not something you should have to bear.” I run my hand over her blonde head and sigh loudly.
Jayden pulls a card from his wallet and hands it to the woman. “Look, I want you to call Rebecca. She’s the headmistress at Halfling Academy. It’s for demigods over eighteen, but she might know of a safe house or somewhere you can stay so you don’t have to keep running.”
I didn’t even know they had safe houses for underage demigods.
“Thank you.” The woman smiles gratefully at Jayden.
“See, Momma, I told you they would help us.” Annie grins at Jayden, her smile knowing. “Don’t give up on what you want most, Jayden, son of Hades. It’s closer than you think.”
She looks over at me then winks.
Just like Adrian, the girl sees way too much.
Jayden pats her shoulder. “Thank you, little seer. I’m sure we will meet again someday.”
“Oh, we most definitely will.”
He chuckles and turns back to the mother. “As soon as Rebecca gives you directions, you need to dump your cell phone. They’re beacons for monsters. It will keep you both safe.”
The woman curses, looking down at the offending device.
“Of course. Thank you all. You have no idea how thankful I am that you were here today like Annie said you would be.”
She hugs Annie tightly and races toward the parking lot without a backward glance.
I sigh, hoping they make it out of here and can call Rebecca without any issues.
“Okay, let’s go find Artemis and get the location of the Hermes students.” I stride to the parking lot.
As much as I am irritated by the goddess right now, she has answers we need.
Once we’re in the car, Greyson pulls up the map, and we make our way to the café. He pulls into the mostly empty parking lot.
“Hopefully, this wasn’t just an elaborate trick to get us to cause chaos at the zoo,” Raven says warily as we all hop out of the car.
Artemis is sitting at a booth in the back of the restaurant and waves us all over.
Her eyes sparkle with glee as she motions for us to sit. “That was a very interesting experience. My brother did say it would be fun.”
“That was not fun,” Jayden grumbles.
“Did Apollo tell you about Annie?” I ask Artemis. “She’s like maybe seven years old and already a powerful seer.”
She shakes her head. “If she’s already powerful and seeing things, the fates have plans for her.” Her brow scrunches together. “It’s a good thing she knew to be where you all were today so that the academy can help keep her safe. You did give them instructions on how to stay safe, yes?”
Jayden nods. “Of course. I gave her Rebecca’s direct line and told her to ditch her phone as soon as she knew where to go.”
Artemis looks at him, seeming impressed, and grins. “If you were a girl, I would definitely want you to be one of my hunters.”
“That’s nice, but no thank you.” Jayden shakes his head.
“I’m not offering to make you a hunter. You’re clearly a boy.” Artemis smirks.
A waitress comes over, bringing dishes that smell divine.
Artemis leans forward. “I took the liberty of ordering a bit of everything. I was waiting for quite a while.”
“Thank you.” I take a bite of some nachos.
