Jayden shrugs. “I mean, he could be a good distraction while the three of us sneak up behind it.”
I scowl at him, putting my fisted hands on my hips which is pretty awkward with a sword in one hand.
“Fine, but if he gets eaten, then it’s on him. I warned him.” I glare at the huge gray wolf that comes up to my waist.
His paws are the size of my head, and I make a note to never get on his bad side.
“Okay, Greyson, go see if you can distract it so we can go around out of sight.” Raven scratches the wolf behind the ears, and he wags his tail like a dog.
It’s so weird to know that’s Greyson.
I nod to Jayden, and we move in a wide arc toward the little tropical oasis, careful to stay out of sight of the snake.
“Step lightly so it doesn’t feel the vibrations in the ground,” Jayden says quietly, and I nod.
The vegetation here is lush, small shrubs and bushes dotted with berries that I don’t dare touch.
The less of a disturbance we make in the place, the better.
Plus, I don’t know what might be poisonous since the person who brought all this over to the US wants me dead in a bad way.
Ten feet from the fountain and the giant snake, a foreign magic washes over me. It makes my eyes widen, and I snap my head in my friends’ direction.
“Shit, we’re too close. We’re gonna get a dose.” I slap my hand over my mouth.
“The fountain got you? I think it got me too.” Raven groans.
These rhymes really are terrible, and now we can’t even communicate while we fight the damn snake without rhyming.
Shit. Fuck. Shit.
“Hold steady. I think Greyson is ready.” At least Jayden’s rhyme wasn’t horrible, but he still rolls his eyes as he realizes he’s rhyming too.
This is so lame.
We spread out around the back of the fountain and wait for Greyson to nip at the snake and try to get it to uncoil itself from the fountain.
It’s more dangerous for it to be moving, but we can’t get to its heart or head while it’s around the fountain.
“Wait a minute or you may lose a digit,” I say.
Fucking hell.
We just need to stop talking. I can’t help the fucking crap coming out of my mouth. I scowl, and Raven snickers.
Greyson lunges forward with a yip and then dodges back, antagonizing the snake to chase after him.
“Yo-ho, let’s go,” Raven yells, and I giggle.
Jayden groans and releases his shadows, but they do nothing when he tries to chain the snake.
“Beth, the chains aren’t binding. Use your lightning.” He shakes his head, pulling his obsidian blade and charging after Raven.
We really need to hurry up and kill this thing so we can call Adrian. That’s going to be an interesting conversation.
I call the lightning to the blade.
The blade glows blue as Raven yells for me. “Beth, watch out. It’s going to get you without a doubt.”
