“That won’t help us in this fight, Jayden.”

There is only one way to kill the lion.

How many of my classmates actually paid attention in history class today?

They are all being stupid and reckless with their magic right now.

“Fuck, what did Heracles do to kill this thing?” He grabs at his white-blond hair in frustration. “I can’t remember. Shit.”

“He choked it,” I say, sprinting over to the lion.

How the hell are we going to get close enough though?

The lion’s head snaps in my direction, sniffing the air. Eerie yellow eyes lock with mine. The lion snarls, batting away a student with its razor-sharp claws and tearing at his shirt.

Blood blooms on the kid’s chest as he goes flying back. He bowls over several other students.

Good. They’ll get him to the medical center and keep themselves safe.

The lion growls and stalks toward me.

My eyes widen as an idea forms. “It’s after me. I’ll distract it while you get close.”

On the journey to Halfling Academy, we were attacked by several monsters calling me Zeus. Obviously, I’m not Zeus, but I am his only living demigod child.

Jayden grasps my arm, pulling me behind him. “There isn’t a chance in Hades I am letting you distract that thing.”

I want to zap the overbearing asshole.

“Your sword will do nothing, Jayden. Like, it will just bounce off the fucking pelt. Someone has to get behind it.”

We’ve spent too much time arguing because in the next instant the lion pounces.

Jayden wraps his arms around me, diving with me out of the way of the beast’s claws.

I land on him, and all the breath is expelled from my lungs as I roll off him. The lion roars as its claws tear up the ground as it skids to a stop.

Gasping, I sit and scan the tall trees for anything that can help us.

He shoots shadows at the beast with one hand, but it doesn’t do anything but bounce off it like everything else.

“Your magic is useless, Jayden. It’s after me just like the rest of them. You need to let me distract it.” I push at his chest, trying to get him to let me go and failing miserably.

“No. You need to get out of here. I will figure out a way,” he snarls, standing and pulling me up with him from the cold ground.

The lion has already spun around and is bounding back to us.

Shoving Jayden doesn’t make him let me go. “Yeah, that makes sense. I can just lead him to the school where he can try to kill everyone. Stupid. Now that he has me in his sights, he’s not going to stop.”

Shit. Jayden’s overbearing bullshit is going to get people killed. Maybe even me.

The trees shake in the breeze the huge golden lion creates, and I shiver as the ground rumbles beneath my feet.

The lion wants me, and I am our best option to distract it so someone will be able to get close enough to kill it.

“I won’t let that happen. Now, go,” he yells, but I shake my head.
