My lack of magical skill seems to personally anger him. After throwing the sword back in the grass, I bring my hands up again and coax my magic out, but it just fizzles again.

“Argh!” I throw my hands in the air, and blue lightning shoots from my fingers into the sky.

Fuck my life.

“I can’t train with you. See? My magic goes haywire when you try to train me.” I shake my head, wishing the asshole would just leave me alone.

“Your magic won’t hurt me. Not really. I can block it before it ever touches me. Again,” he barks out.

My scowl is now permanently attached to my face, but I try again.

It won’t hurt him. He’ll block it. Please cooperate so I can get away from him.

Great, now I’m having inner dialogue with my magic. Nope. I’m not crazy at all.

The assurance works though because a ball of lightning forms in my hand. I pull my arm back and throw it at him.

Shadows surround the ball inches from his face, and he grins.

I hate it. His grin makes me feel things I have no business feeling. It’s dangerous.

Spinning away from him, I conjure another ball of magic.

The glowing ball crackles with electricity in my palm when a whiny voice fills the air, making me stiffen.

“Jayden, I have missed you.”

Great. Mia. That bitch. Fuck my life. Is today just national asshole day?

I tilt my head back, pinching the bridge of my nose, and close my eyes, wishing the ground would swallow me up.

When I open my eyes, the bright-blue sky mocks me. Well, shit, I guess I don’t have powers over the Earth. That sucks.

Vibrating with anger, my whole body fills with static electricity. Clouds begin to cover the cheery sky so it’s not mocking me anymore.

Hmmm, that’s new.

“Hey, chick. You may want to calm down.” Raven smiles at me from a few feet away.

“I don’t have power over the weather, Raven.” I’m not even sure if I believe that though. It’s gettingdarkout.

“Well, considering it looks like a storm is brewing just over our heads, I kind of beg to differ.” She shrugs like this revelation is no big deal.

“Beth, you need to control your damn magic,” Jayden yells over the roaring thunder.

Well, shit.

Trees sway in the breeze, and a crack of lightning hits a tree right behind me. I jump. A shriek fills the air, and I already know who it is.

“She’s fucking crazy, Jayden,” Mia snaps.

Spinning toward the voice, I grimace as Mia wraps herself around Jayden. My magic goes truly nuts. Before I can stop it, a small bolt of my power comes out and zaps the two of them.

“Oops, my power is being an asshole today.” I don’t apologize because I’m not sorry.

Yes, it was an accident, but that bitch needs to stay the fuck away from me. She can have Jayden. I would just rather not see it.

Mia sneers. “Right. I really believe that was an accident.”
