“I’ll help you with your magic, Beth,” Jayden offers, and I’m shaking my head before he even finishes the sentence.

That’s not a no but a hell fucking no.

After sprinting to the weapons case to get away from the stupid asshole, I grab my sword and turn to find Raven and Jayden walking and whispering together. I narrow my eyes at them.

“C’mon, Raven. I’m ready to spar.” I crouch into a fighting stance, but Jayden is in front of me in an instant.

Black shadows slither over Jayden’s arms, writhing as his muscles bunch. He moves to throw a ball of magic at me.

“What the fuck, Jayden?” I scream, diving to the side.

Fucking asshole doesn’t know how to take no for an answer.

“You’re supposed to block with your magic, Beth. Have you been practicing at all? You’ve been here for months.” He throws his hands up in the air, glaring at me.

Well, fuck you too.

“Send a bolt of lightning at me,” Jayden shouts.

We circle each other, crouched in a fighting stance. I drop my sword on the soft green grass and reach for my magic instead.

It swirls in my gut. I close my eyes and imagine the blue ball of magic sitting inside me, ready to be used.

A small ball forms in my hand, crackling with energy when I open my eyes.

“You sure about this?” The bright blue electricity zaps against my palm.

An evil grin crosses my lips when I imagine the ball zapping the overbearing asshole.

“It needs to be bigger.” He stops circling and widens his stance as he waits for me.

I flip him the bird then look down at the glowing orb, concentrating on pouring more into it, but nothing happens.

He heaves an exasperated groan that just pisses me off, and I growl in frustration and throw the small ball at his stupid face.

Jayden coats himself in shadows, completely disappearing, and the ball of magic hits a nearby tree. It sizzles against the brown bark before extinguishing.

“You need to practice more,” he says from behind me.

Goose bumps erupt on my arms as his hot breath washes over the back of my neck.

“You need to fuck off, Jayden.”

He moves closer. His shadows slither around me, and my magic dances in my chest, ready to strike.

What the hell? Why am I reacting to him like this?

When I concentrate again, a much larger ball forms in my palm. I spin around to launch it at him, but it fizzles out. “Damn it.”

“You need better control. Have you been meditating like you’re supposed to?”

Jayden is seriously about to get a sword to the gut.

Ignoring him, I saunter over to my blade and reach down to pick it up. The hilt feels cool in my hand.

“My magic doesn’t want to hurt you for some stupid reason. That is not something we agree on.” I point the sword at him, crouching into a fighting stance.

“Put the damn sword down, Beth. You need to work on your magic. There are rumors that students are going missing. If you can’t use your magic, you’ll be screwed if they try to take you too.”
