“Do you feel anything?” I ask.

“I feel nothing,” Draven says with a frown. “There should be the buzz of magic or something here. How far does this go?”

“I don’t know. We didn’t notice the lack of buzzing energy when we were fighting the crazy monster,” Raven snarks at him, and I shoot her a look to behave.

“Raven, can you hold back the snark?” I roll my eyes at her, moving away from the site of the battle to go farther down the wards to see where the break in the wards starts.

“Where the fuck are you going?” Jayden’s hand wraps around my arm.

“What have I told you about fucking touching me?” I yell, yanking my arm from his grip. The asshole never listens to me. “I am seeing how big the fucking gaping hole in our wards is. Leave me alone.”

“No. You shouldn’t be walking off on your own, especially injured, when there is a gaping hole in our fucking wards,” Jayden yells back.

Dax is there in a second, standing between the two of us, his back to me.

Here we go again.

I spin around, letting the two of them posture and throw their big-dick energy around until I can find the end of the hole in the wards. Farther along, the steady buzzing of the wards starts up again.

“Here,” I shout to Draven.

He jogs over, passing the two alphaholes and giving them a dirty look.

Draven whistles as he lifts his hands in the air. “That’s a pretty big hole. How did no one notice it?”

His hands take on a red glow as he pushes his magic into the wards. I’ve never seen someone do this before.

With the number of us out here, someone would be stupid to try to grab Draven. Bailey was just being a scared little bitch.

Dax and Jayden are whispering angrily, and I shoot them a scowl. If they mess up Draven’s concentration, I’m going to zap them.

Dax backs away from Jayden stepping up to my side.

“You need to put some cream on your leg. It looks a bit dry,” Dax says softly.

“I’m fine. I need to be alert.” I wave him off, scanning the dense forest.

I don’t know how this can’t be an inside job. Someone broke a hole in the wards and has been kidnapping students to keep the wards broken, but why?

It can’t be just to get to me, right? That’s just stupid. Put the entire academy at risk for one person. It doesn’t make sense.

After I wave Raven over, I whisper, “This has to be someone inside the school, right?”

“I don’t see how someone outside the school could pull this off.” She chews her lip, shifting from foot to foot.

“The missing Hermes kids and the wards deteriorating… It’s all connected. It has to be someone on the inside, but why?” I clench my fists at my sides.

“We need to talk to Rebecca. She needs to know what we have figured out,” Jayden says from my other side, and I glare at him.

“Whatwehave figured out? All you have been doing is nagging at me.” I flip my caramel hair over my shoulder as I turn away from him. “After we are done here, we need to find the headmistress.”

I was going to say that anyway.

We tried last night to find her when we put everything together, but she wasn’t in her office. It’s the only reason we were patrolling.

If we hadn’t been here patrolling this morning, I shudder to think what would have happened to the academy with a fire-breathing Chimera on the loose and everyone asleep in their beds.

Draven turns, grinning at us. “That’s done.”
