It’s almost scarier when she whispers. She’s dangerous when she’s quiet.

Jayden leans forward on the couch, placing his elbows on his knees. “Is this about the missing students?”

“How do you know about that?” Rebecca hisses.

“We have eyes, Rebecca. Students are disappearing. Classes have been smaller the last week or two.” I raise an eyebrow at her, drumming my fingers on the soft, green fabric on the arm of the chair.

“Yes, well, we can’t figure it out. It seems completely random. I went to the Oracle to see what we can do about this.”

She remains perfectly poised in her chair behind the desk, her hands folded on top, but she doesn’t fool me. Whatever she is about to say, she doesn’t like it one bit.

Raven shifts in her seat. “What did the Oracle say?”

No one likes talking to the Oracle. He’s creepy as fuck and always talks in riddles.

“He predicted the attack on the school. He said whoever defeats the monster will be able to figure out where the missing students are and save them.”

“That would be the three of us.” I sigh, rubbing a hand over my forehead.

The headmistress groans, probably knowing that sending us to find the missing students is a terrible idea.

“Yes, the three of you are the students who put your lives on the line to take down the Nemean Lion and save the other students at the school, getting injured in the process.” Her frown is disapproving, but she doesn’t scold us.

But her frown is an exact contradiction to her words though, and it irritates me. There was no one else out there who could stop the lion.

Her disapproval is seriously misplaced.

They teach us to fight monsters to protect ourselves from them. The fact that we are some of the only students who stayed behind to defeat the lion is seriously pathetic.

Ares, Apollo, and Athena are all gods with strategy and battle magic, yet only one Ares descendent stayed behind when we fought the lion.

Where were the other eight Ares kids and the Apollo and Athena students were nowhere to be found.

“What else did the Oracle say?” I ask.

“Nothing else except that you can’t go yet.” She sighs, standing from her chair. “There is more we need to know before we can send you to find the missing students.”

“What the hell?” I practically yell. “So, what are we supposed to do? Let more students go missing? What’s happening with the wards?”

“We don’t know that either.”

Jayden jumps from the couch and pushes a hand through his hair in frustration. “What do we actually know?”

“Nothing, which is why we have to wait for the three of you to go find the missing students.”

Shaking her head, Raven stands and starts pacing. “So what was the point of this meeting?”

“You need to be ready. The Oracle may decide it’s time to go at any time.” Rebecca stands, strolls over to the door, and opens it. “Why don’t you three go to dinner, and we will talk when I know more.”

Looking up at the antique clock on the wall, I grimace. It’s after dinnertime already, and if we’re going to get to eat, we need to hurry. My stomach takes this opportunity to growl loudly, and my cheeks heat.

“Thank you, Rebecca. We will be ready.” Slapping my hands on my knees, I push up out of the chair and head to the door.

Clearly, we are being dismissed for now.

I walk in a daze to the cafeteria.

What the hell is happening here?
