“One thing at a time, Beth. Let’s get the head.” Jayden reaches out and squeezes my arm.
“Okay.” I take a couple tentative steps forward and lean down to grasp the T-shirt over the hissing snakes.
How they are still alive, even with the Gorgon’s head chopped off, is unnerving.
“Everyone, close your fucking eyes. Now,” I shout.
Then I pick the head up, pointing it at the other Gorgon.
The bitch shrieks as they both turn to stone.
The head becomes heavy, and I drop it to the ground. It shatters on a rock in front of me and crumbles to dust.
“Well, shit. What if that bitch can come back now?” Jayden asks.
I hate that he’s probably right, but I have bigger things on my mind than a future Gorgon problem.
The fight has finally died down. Only students fill the path since the wards are restored and they can no longer reform inside. I glance around making sure everyone is okay and sigh in relief.
I turn to Adrian. “Did you see how we fix him?”
“You still have the medicine that the healer gave you?” He raises a brow, and I nearly face-palm.
Of course that would be the answer.
I grab the bottle and dropper from my bag and race to Dax, praying to whichever god is listening that this will work.
There’s no way to drop it on his tongue, so I drop it to his stone-cold lips.
He doesn’t move or react even at the last drop.
“It should work,” Adrian says, patting my shoulder.
I don’t take my eyes off Dax. I like Dax. He’s funny and he’s sweet, but most of all, he’s Raven’s brother. I don’t want him to die.
“Please, please, wake up.” Tears burn the backs of my eyes.
Draven steps to my other side and squeezes my hand before pulling on it.
“Look.” He points to Dax’s feet where stone is crumbling away and his boots are clearly visible.
“Oh my gods, it’s working,” I say excitedly as more cracks and fissures break through the stone.
Dax shakes himself roughly.
“Beth.” Dax grins, his hand cupping my cheek.
In an instant, his lips are sealed with mine before I even realize what the fuck is happening.
A sound of anger and frustration comes from beside me as I attempt to pull away, but Dax has the strength of Ares. His arms wind around me like iron.
Finally, I break the kiss in a daze.
“What are you doing, Dax?” I smack at his chest.
What the fuck?
I peer around our battlefield and don’t see Jayden.
Draven and Adrian both look uncomfortable, and I am just so confused. Why the fuck would Dax kiss me like that and where the hell did Jayden go?
We saved the Hermes kids, but war is on the horizon. We will have to work together to beat whoever is behind this and stop the end of the world, but how can we do that when we are still at odds with each other?
The end…for now.
