“We need to get the Gorgons out of the way before any of the Ares kids get sidetracked and turned to stone,” I say softly.

The clash of weapons and shrieks of pain fill the space behind us as Adrian and Draven watch our backs.

I crack my whip out at the ankle of the nearest Gorgon. She whips around with a scream of pain.

“The only way to kill them is to cut off their heads, Beth. All that did was piss her off,” Jayden shouts.

I shift uncomfortably. “Yeah, and it got their attention on us. Exactly as I planned.”

“Maybe tell me the plan next time?” he growls.

“I’m making it up as I go along.” I shrug, looking up at the Gorgon’s neck.

I don’t dare look any higher, but if I’m going to cut the bitch’s head off, I need to look at least at her neck.

Jayden grunts. “Wonderful.”

The Gorgon storms to us, bending to try to meet my eyes, but I look away quickly. She snarls and leaps for us, but I crack my whip around her neck, pulling it tightly.

Her hands come up to her neck to tug on it even as the electricity makes her body jolt.

My magic convulses around her throat, and I aim my sword there.

“Everyone, close your eyes,” I shout.

I cut her head from her body. Jayden pulls me back as an agonizing cry fills the air from the other Gorgon.

“Shit.” I duck behind the shield.

“Beth?” Dax calls over the sounds of battle.

“Don’t look up, Dax,” I yell.

My warning’s too late. He’s searching for me when his gaze lands on the Gorgon head on the ground, her eyes pointed straight at him.

“No,” I scream, but he’s already turning to stone.

Even as annoying as he and Jayden have been around each other, and all the male posturing, I still don’t want anything to happen to him.

“Fuck,” Jayden shouts.

He grabs a shirt from his pack and throws it over the dead Gorgon’s head.

The rest of her body turned to dust, and it makes me wonder why the head stayed behind but none of the other monsters did.

“Can we get closer to the head? Maybe we can encase her sister in stone?” It’s about the only idea I have as another shrieking Gorgon rounds on us, the snakes in her hair hissing in fury.

“Is that even a good idea?” Jayden asks even as we take a step toward the covered head.

There are too many students around who can get caught in the crossfire.

I raise an eyebrow at him. “Probably not my best, but she looks pretty pissed, and I don’t want to turn to stone today.”

“I don’t think it’s permanent. As long as nothing happens to the statue, we should be able to reverse it,” Adrian calls from behind me.

I breathe a sigh of relief, glad that my friend can probably be saved.

“Maybe. Hopefully,” he mutters under his breath, and I deflate again.
