The Ares students are spread out, all fighting different monsters when we get to the path.
The Gorgons are standing back, letting the others fight our friends as they attempt to make eye contact with the Ares students.
“What’s the plan?” Jayden asks, and I shrug.
I hadn’t really thought about it past Jayden and the shield.
“You don’t have a plan?”
“Well, if we stay behind the shield and keep our eyes low, we should still be able to use our magic against them, right?” I chew my lip nervously.
“Yeah, but who will we have at our backs?” Jayden asks as Adrian and Draven jog up to us.
“We can help with that.” Draven grins, and Jayden growls.
“No, you need to fix the wards.” I stare at Draven in horror.
He can’t try to protect me at the expense of everyone else.
“The wards are going strong. I even managed to make it so they can’t reform here.” Draven’s grin is cocky, and I shake my head with a small smile.
“Fine,” Jayden groans. “Just stay at our backs, and don’t look at the Gorgons.”
“We aren’t stupid, man. We’re here to help.” Adrian eyes Jayden like he wants to say more but keeps quiet.
These guys are seriously confusing the shit out of me.
“Good. Let’s move. The Ares students are looking exhausted,” I chime in to interrupt this weird-as-fuck male posturing.
I wish Raven were here. At least she could lessen the testosterone in the air.
“They probably are,” Adrian says softly. “The last couple days, we have been patrolling the wards nonstop. Ares, Athena, and Apollo houses have been on the front lines. We are all tired.”
“What about my brothers and sisters I left behind?” Draven asks.
Adrian sighs. “The few left refuse to leave the school grounds and come anywhere near the wards, even with backup.”
“Fucking cowards,” Draven mumbles.
I can’t agree with him more, but maybe he’s being too hard on them since they’re mostly just barely eighteen.
“Can we fucking focus on now and not worry about before?” Jayden barks at them. “The Gorgons are going to hear us coming if you don’t shut up.”
What the fuck is his problem?
He has been really weird with Draven since the cave.
He’s not wrong about the Gorgons, but he could be less of an asshole about it. I shoot him a glare, but he’s not looking at me.
He’s glaring at the men at our back.
“Jayden, focus, and stop being an ass,” I whisper to him.
We are all on the same team, but he’s being a dick.
I crouch into my fighting stance, and Jayden pulls his shield out to cover us both with it. I focus on the Gorgons’ feet in front of us. My whip is heavy in my hand.
The Ares students are holding their own even while keeping their eyes down.
