But they immediately reform.

“Draven. We need the wards fixed now,” I shout. “They aren’t staying dead.”

“Fuck, I’m working on it,” he calls back.

“Beth, watch out,” Jayden yells behind me.

I duck and roll, but I roll the wrong way into black scaly feet. The monster swipes a claw at me. Searing pain arches my back as it gouges its claw into it.

“Fuck, that hurts.”

Blood gushes from the wound, and my left arm is useless at my side. My sword sits abandoned on the ground.

I lash out my whip, wrapping it around the monster’s neck, and it bellows as it explodes.

“You need a healer.” Adrian crouches next to me. “Its claws might be poisonous.”

“Your dad is Apollo. You have healing abilities, right?” I ask, and Adrian shakes his head. “Well, that’s just great.”

I stand up gingerly, wincing when my shoulder stretches the wrong way.

“I can try to find someone, but we’re stretched pretty thin with the number of monsters we’re fighting.” He scans the area, and I shake my head.

“It’s fine. I can wait until we get this cleared.” I crack the whip at yet another monster, and it sizzles before exploding to dust.

“Beth, are you okay?” Draven shouts, taking a step toward me.

“I’m fine. We need you to focus on the wards.” I glance around the wooded area, noticing the exhaustion on my friends’ and classmates’ faces.

We won’t be able to go on much longer at this rate.

Raven runs past me, swinging her ax at all the monsters in her path with a battle cry.

Jayden runs up, throwing my bag at me with a grim nod, and I wonder where the hell he found that.

“The medicine,” he shouts.

His shadows lock a monster in chains, and he runs it through with his obsidian sword.

My eyes widen when I remember the medicine the healer gave me before we left on the mission.

Dropping to the ground, I dig around in the bag for the bottle and dropper and quickly put three drops on my tongue.

The magic pours through me as soon as the last drop hits my tongue, and my arm starts stitching itself back up.

I roll my shoulders, finally finding relief from the pain.

“Where are the worst of the monsters?” I ask Adrian.

“The path that leads to the school is almost overrun. The Ares kids are blocking the path, but I’m not sure how long they will hold up against them.” He runs a hand through his dirty blond hair. “Two of the Gorgons are there.”

“Fuck. Okay, I’m going that way,” I yell and look for Jayden. He has a shield that will hide us both. “Jayden. We have a Gorgon problem. Come with me.”

Surprise lights his features, probably because I’m actually asking him for help. He’s the best one to help me though.

“Let’s go.” He rushes to my side.

“We need your shield.” I point over his shoulder. “We can’t look them in the eyes.”
