“No pumpkin, listen to our alpha female. This could be dangerous.” Patrick reaches over, grabbing her hand. “I’ll go leave Libby with her mom and be right back.”
Libby lets him lead her out of the house, waving at us, but the sullen expression says it all.
“That kid is going to be a heartbreaker.” I chuckle, standing from the crouched position and strolling over to the chair in front of his desk and sitting in it.
“She’s definitely going to be trouble.” Archer agrees. We sit in silence while waiting for Angela and Alex to return. It feels like forever before the phone rings, startling me.
“Hello?” Archer answers the phone with a grunt. His eyes burn with fury at whoever is on the phone. “Kyle, I have something of yours, my mate and I are going to be there in an hour. I don’t want to hear any of your shit. You know what you did. You’re lucky you got the courtesy of a warning.”
Standing, I shuffle behind the desk and reach out a comforting hand to his back, rubbing it. He’s vibrating with rage as he hangs up the phone. “What’s going on?”
“He tried to bar us from stepping on his pack lands. I shut it down.” He scrubs a hand over his face before turning to me and leaning his forehead against my stomach.
“We have to go, but maybe we should be diplomatic when we get there,” I say, running my hand over his hair. Archer groans at the feel of my hands in his hair, and his arms tighten around me.
It’s the first time I have seen him like this, and I’m not sure if he even realizes he’s doing it. A knock on the door has him straightening and his mask falling back into place as he pushes me back gently to stand and stride to the front door.
Angela stands on the other side of the door, her expression hard, and her arms are crossed over her chest. “Are we ready to go?”
“Let’s get this over with.” I sigh, stepping outside behind Archer. Angela raises an eyebrow but thankfully doesn’t comment. I really don’t want Archer to change his mind because everyone is questioning my being there.
We hop in the truck while Angela and the others get in a car to follow us. I do my best not to look out the back window but fail miserably. The blue tarp in the bed of the truck haunts me, but I’m glad they thought to cover the body.
“Don’t look at it, Jara.” Archer turns my head, so I’m looking at him. “You don’t need to see that any more than necessary.”
“I know. I didn’t mean to look, but then I just couldn’t stop.” I whisper. I need to steal myself for what is about to happen. I am about to see my tormentor’s body again as Archer lays it at Kyle’s feet. I need this closure, though. I need a reminder that he’s dead and to see Bonnie for myself to make sure she didn’t have anything to do with this.
I’ll know when we get there by her reaction to our words whether she knew or not. “I just hope Bonnie doesn’t know.”
“I don’t think she did, but we will know soon enough.” Archer grunts staring straight ahead. He’s got his cruel mask in place, but I have to wonder if it’s actually a mask as we bump over the road coming closer and closer to Kyle’s pack lands.
Archer hits the brakes at the border between the packs. There are five wolves in their shifted form blocking the path. “Stay here.” He growls as he puts the car in park and jumps out.
The wolves growl out angrily. “You need to let me pass.”
Angela, Alex, and Patrick walk up on either side of the truck, all in fighting stances as they stand around Archer. “Your Alpha has wronged my mate and me. He will atone for his treachery. I do not want to kill you, but I will if you do not get out of my way. Now.”
The wolves' heads swing to look at each other before scampering off deeper into their pack lands. Archer stomps back to the truck, and the others run to get in their car. Archer is not waiting any longer.
The tires squeal as he races down the bumpy dirt road to Kyle’s pack house. I’m glad I have my seat belt on because I would probably hit the ceiling as uneven as this ride is in his fury.
Kyle made a colossal mistake sending Carter after me but trying to keep us from his pack lands threw fuel on the fire. Kyle better watch out because I doubt anyone will be able to call Archer off if he gives Kyle what he truly deserves.

ARCHER
What the fuck is Kyle trying to pull? I should fucking challenge him as the Alpha of his pack and take everything from him. He thought those weak ass wolves would keep him safe from me?
I shove open the door and jump out of the truck storming to Jara’s side and opening the door for her.
“Angela. You do not leave Jara’s side.” I bark, and Alex and Patrick pull Carter’s body from the truck.
“Yes, Alpha,” Angela says, her tone hard. She knows the stakes here. We are in enemy territory with the most important thing in my life. She will not fail me.
The house is not as large as mine. It’s nestled in the trees set away from the rest of the village. “What the fuck are you doing here, Archer?” Kyle barks out as he stomps down creaky wooden steps.
Jara tenses beside me. “You want to do this out here in full view of your pack? You want them to know what a treacherous bastard you are? You broke the fucking treaty. I am within my rights to challenge you.”
