“We smelled him in the forest close to Kyle’s territory.” I sigh, leaning against the desk. “I had to issue an alpha command to get Jara’s wolf to go back to the house.”

“She wouldn’t listen otherwise?” she asks, shocked.

“I think her wolf is a bit feral and a lot pissed at me.” I chuckle. She refused to shift back or stay where I told her to.

“Can you blame her? What if you were locked up without the ability to shift for weeks?” Angela raises a brow at me. Are the women in my life going to just be broken records forever? I am tired of having my decisions questioned and having to repeat myself over and over.

“I’m not repeating myself anymore. I will do whatever it takes to keep my mate and this pack safe. End of fucking story.”

“Even if it makes her hate you?” Angela challenges.

“She has to be alive to hate me, so yes. Even if she hates me, at least she will be alive,” I growl out. Of course, I don’t want her to hate me, but if it’s that or losing her to a clear threat, I’ll take the hatred any day. “Hatred, I can work with. Death I cannot.”

“Fair enough.” She nods, leaning back in my chair. “What are you doing back so soon? You would think that you would have stayed away a little longer.”

“I was notified that some of her packages came in, and I’m hoping bringing them out to her will warm her to me so she will stop fucking ignoring me. Also, I can only chop so much firewood before I lose my mind with her so close and nothing else to do.” I grumble at the last part.

It’s been difficult being in close proximity to the woman and having no escape. I always want her, but she has been cold to me except when she was panicking in her wolf form.

Her scent drives me crazy, and my wolf to howl. I wish she would just trust me to take care of her and keep her safe instead of arguing or ignoring me at every turn.

“So you are buying her affections now?” she chuckles, and I grunt. I'm not interested in her opinions on any of this, but I know I will get it anyway.

“Whatever. I’m trying to soften her up. It’s torture being ignored by her.”

A banging on the front door has my muscles tensing, and I stride from the office into the entryway and throw the door open. Alex stands there, his eyes wide. “What is it?”

“We scented the wolf, but I don’t think it’s a rogue. I think it’s a member of Kyle’s pack.” Alex huffs out a breath.

“Why would a member of Kyle’s pack want to harm Jara?” I ask, almost to myself. Is Kyle behind this? Is he trying to start a war?

“The wolf also ran into Greyson’s property, but Jara didn’t recognize it as someone from the pack. Would the wolf go into Greyson’s pack if they were one of Kyle’s?” Angela asks with her hands on her hips.

“Kyle and Greyson have had an alliance since before either were alphas. If the wolf thought he was being chased out of our territory and too far away from home, Greyson’s pack would be the safe option.” I say, rubbing my chin in thought.

“That’s true. I just don’t know.” Angela grumbles. I want to know what she’s thinking. “Who chased the scent into Kyle’s territory?” She asks.

“We were spread out a bit. I never actually smelled the wolf. Carter gave the warning and went after him.” Alex scrubs a hand over his head. He looks exhausted.

“Have you been sleeping? How often are you patrolling, Alex?” I cut in. This man has changed so much in the last few weeks.

“I have been helping wherever I can. I helped clear the scorched earth in the clearing and have been patrolling as much as possible.” He folds his arms over his chest.

“You are going to burn yourself out,” I growl.

“No one else is taking this seriously. We patrolled with two other wolves today but do you think the other guys helped us? I rushed to where Carter was, but the others never came over there. They just continued walking the perimeter.”

“I have about had it with the men of this damn pack.” Angela snarls. If anyone takes all this seriously, it’s Angela who lost her possible mate because of this damn rogue.

“Well, if one of the idiots is injured because they aren’t taking this seriously, then maybe they will understand and start to care,” I huff out.

“The next time, someone might die like Jacob did.” Angela throws her hands up.

“I can’t make them care about their lives or the lives of their families,” I grumble. These wolves are getting on my last fucking nerve. They need to fucking focus on what’s important and stop being lazy.

“I don’t mind patrolling whenever necessary. We need this bastard out of our territory.” Alex says with a growl.

“That’s not the point. I ordered patrols of four wolves, so no one has to make an impossible choice again. I know Carter feels guilty about what happened to Jacob.” I clench and unclench my fists. I storm back into the house and into my office. “Who was with you today?”
