“Mike and Tim,” Alex says slowly. He doesn’t want to throw anyone under the bus, but he will when it comes to our pack's safety.
“I’ll deal with them. This is fucking bullshit.” I flop into my chair behind the desk scrubbing a hand over my face. “If I have to put people in cells for not following orders, then I will.”
“Understood, Alpha.” Alex nods, taking the seat in front of mine.
“You said you cleaned up the scorch marks in the clearing?” I ask.
“Yes, Alpha. Patrick and I did. We made sure to keep it quiet too.” Alex says.
“I appreciate that. Jara doesn’t need any more problems within the pack.” I straighten a stack of papers on my desk just for something to do with my hands.
“Just because he is after your mate doesn’t mean the rest of us are safe from him. We need to take this seriously.” Alex drums his fingers on his knee as it bounces up and down.
“How long did Patrick patrol yesterday?” I ask because I have a feeling these three men are patrolling every day and not taking many breaks. If I have to use my alpha command for them to take a day off, then I fucking will.
“He was out there when I got out there this morning. I told him to go the fuck home and go to bed. He was dead on his feet.” He shakes his head.
“Mother fucker. Go back out to the patrol and tell them we are having a fucking meeting in the center of town.” I slam my fist on the desk, and it creaks.
“Yes, Alpha.” He averts his eyes as he stands and leaves the room.
“Angela, gather the pack." I snarl. "If they think they can slack off and be lazy, I will show them what happens to them.”
“Yes, alpha.” She says and scurries from the room. I hadn’t planned to be here this long, and I hope Jara is following my directions because I once again have to make an example of more members of my pack.
I jump from the chair pacing the room a couple of times before storming from the house and making my way to the center of town. Several people are milling around when I get there, and Patrick nods to me. He has dark circles around his eyes, and I shake my head.
“Have you slept at all, Patrick? When was the last time you took a day off from patrol?” I glare down at him.
“I don’t need a day off, Alpha.’ He shrugs. “We need our pack safe.”
“I also need my best wolves alert and well rested, but it looks like you are all dead on your feet.” I fist my hands on my hips. He perks up a bit at me, calling him one of my best wolves, but I’m unsure how he ever doubted that.
“Thank you, Alpha.” He bares his neck to me.
“Stand behind me. I want the pack to know who I am really talking to. This fucking shit ends now.”
Alex walks up with Mike, Tim, and Carter following behind him, and I wave them over. Carter doesn’t look much better than Alex, and Patrick and I curse. “Carter, behind me with Alex and Patrick.”
“Yes, Alpha.” He jogs over to stand next to Patrick as Alex saunters up as well. The town center fills with all the wolves in the pack, and Angela comes to stand next to me.
“That’s everyone, Alpha.” She nods, putting her hands behind her back.
“Listen up.” I roar over the whispering crowd. “I thought making an example of John would be enough to get you all to do your part, but apparently, I was wrong.” I shake my head sadly, and the two men in front of me pale, glaring at Alex.
“Do you see these three men behind me? Notice anything off about them?” The crowd starts whispering again, but they don’t comment. “Carter was attacked yesterday and had deep claw marks on his leg. He was out patrolling today and tried to run down the rogue on his own again, and only Alex went to assist him.”
“Alpha, it’s fine,” Carter says, his ears turning slightly pink.
“No, it’s not. What if you were attacked again and only one person was there? They would have to make an impossible choice which is the very fucking reason that I doubled patrols.” I roar.
Mike and Tim flinch, attempting to flee, but I’m faster, grabbing them by the collar of their shirts. They will both be spending the night in the cells.
“You don’t get to flee when you know you will end up in cells. You could have been responsible for the death of a pack mate today because you are either too lazy or too cowardly to step in, and since we don’t allow cowards in this pack, you better fucking hope it’s laziness because that is something I can break you of.”
“I’m no coward, Alpha. I figured they had it under control.” Mike whimpers.
“You are lazy then. Listen to me, everyone. We will be patrolling like this from now on whether we catch the rogue or not. I don’t ask much of you. Our pack is one of the wealthiest packs in the region, and I don’t make you do anything except protect the pack.”
