“That bitch was borderline threatening to challenge Jara. I nearly ripped her head from her shoulders from the way she was disrespecting Jara and me.”
“That’s what Jara said in a nutshell.” I scrub a hand over my face. “We need to talk about the current threats.”
Angela waves me inside, and I duck into the warm cabin. The fire is burning happily in the fireplace, and I sit in a warm olive green armchair, crossing my ankle over my knee. “What are we going to do about them?” Angela crosses her arms and sits on her beige loveseat.
“We need to set up patrols. I don’t like that a wolf has been roaming my woods without our knowledge. We have become lax in protecting our pack.” I pinch the bridge of my nose, hating that I have to admit that.
“I’ll get the pack together tomorrow so we can set up a schedule.” Angela agrees.
“I think we need to warn pack members who would be most vulnerable.” I nod.
“Okay, we can have a full pack meeting. What about the humans?”
“I haven’t seen any other sign of the humans since we lost them in Kyle’s territory.” I smack myself on the forehead, remembering I must warn him that we tracked humans to the border.
“What’s wrong?” Angela raises a brow, and I shake my head.
“Do you have your phone on you?” I ask, and she pulls the smartphone from her pocket.
It’s not late in the evening, so hopefully, the alpha is around. I dial the phone and put it to my ear, drumming my fingers on my knee.
“Hello?” A soft female voice answers on the third ring.
“Bonnie? I need to speak to Kyle, please. It’s urgent.” I reply.
“Alpha Archer? Kyle isn’t here. He’s tending to the pack. Can I give him a message for you?” Her voice shakes, startled. She knows there is no good reason for me to call the rival alpha.
“I just need to give you fair warning. We tracked humans through our pack territory to your border. At least three scents, and I don’t think they are hikers as they split up. It was very strange.” I lay out the whole situation for her. Angela has her brows raised practically to her hairline.
“Thank you, Archer. I will let him know.” She hangs up the phone. I can’t blame her. I doubt Kyle would be pleased if he came home to find his mate talking to me on the phone.
“Why warn them?” Angela shakes her head.
“We have a peace treaty that states we must warn each other of possible threats.” I shrug, already knowing what she will say next.
“You think he gives a shit? Do you think he would tell us if he realized there was a possible threat to us?” she throws up her hands, standing up and pacing. She’s not wrong. Kyle would just assume, let us burn, then warn us of the threat.
“I’m not giving him and Grayson any excuse to break the peace treaty. They are waiting for me to step out of line so they can declare war on my pack, Angela. I can’t let that happen.”
I refuse to let those bastards take my pack. I’ll die first.
A knock on the door has my shoulders rolling back. “Are you expecting someone?”
“I am, actually, and it’s none of your business.” Angela gets up from the couch and strolls to the door, trying to act casual, but I have known the female forever and know her tells. Her hands shake with nervous energy.
She opens the door, and Jacob, one of my enforcers, steps in, kissing her cheek, and my brows raise practically to my hairline.
“Oh, alpha. I’m sorry. Is this a bad time?” He turns to Angela.
“No, actually, I think you could help.” I stand and hold out my hand to shake his, gripping his hand a little harder than I usually would because if he was dating my best friend, he was going to be respectful of her, and if he breaks her heart, I’ll break his neck.
“How can I help?” he lowers his eyes, and I let go of his hand.
“We need to let the pack know we are having an emergency pack meeting in the morning. Do you want to come with me?” Angela batts her eyelashes at him, and it’s so awkward I nearly crack up laughing. I hold it in just barely.
“Sure. I can go with you.” He holds the door open for her to go through first. Hmm. The enforcer might be good for her. I nod with approval.
“I don’t have to tell you that if you hurt her, I will hurt you, right?” I whisper, staring into his eyes as I walk to the door.
