“You tried to have me murdered in prison?”
“More than one. I don’t even know how that old bat found out about it, but every time I got a report back, it was Mama Sam who always got in the way.”
“I knew there were fights. I never knew they were her way of protecting me.”
“Of course you didn’t. Did you know even you’ve been laundering money for a drug cartel? Yeah, cooking the books of a video bar. Going behind your brother’s back. Taking advantage of his generosity and hectic schedule. Then, to my horror of course, you’re going to overdose on fentanyl because you just can’t face up to the consequences of your actions.” Hector pointed to a piece of paper on the dashboard. “I already have your suicide note written for you, just like a good brother should.”
“Did something happen to you as a baby, or were you born this evil?”
He ignored her question. “It’s the kind of end that everyone expects for a girl who’s been in trouble since she hit puberty. You are that kind of stupid. I don’t even have to think of new ways to use you as my patsy. You keep falling for the same shit, over and over.” Hector laughed. “So stupid.”
Yeah, that was her, the girl too stupid to breathe. She’d proved it to herself and everyone else her whole life. And now she was going to lose her new life, her love, her Daddy.
CHAPTER 26
Two hours. It had been two hours since Sawyer had seen his babygirl, forty-five minutes since Hector had snatched her. The last view he’d had of the tracking app Deke showed him put them nearly at the Society’s compound.
Now that he had his bag, he could plan the best way to get in and get her out without her being hurt. Which was better than beating himself up. Why the fuck hadn’t he told Lele everything he knew about her stepbrother?
It was his fault she was gone. Lele had no reason to think taking a ride with her stepbrother would lead to being kidnapped by him.
His gut churned when he thought about what she was going through. He didn’t even have to guess. He knew. She was crushed that her stepbrother, the one she’d depended on because he taught her to, was the one who had caused all those problems in the first place. And she was terrified of what came next. He closed his eyes for a second and thought of more pleasant things, like deboning Cortez like a fish.
His phone rang, and Reid’s name came up on the screen. Thelast thing he needed right now was the distraction of a friend trying to talk him back from the edge. The problem was Sawyer didn’t want to be talked off the edge.
But he had to take the call. Reid might have intel about Hector. Sawyer couldn’t take the risk.
“Reid, if you’re trying to talk me out of?—”
“Shut the fuck up and listen. If you’re headed to the Society compound, you're headed the wrong direction.”
“Man, I saw the GPS data. I know that’s where he was headed.”
“You don’t know shit,” Reid snarled. “You want to go lone wolf, become a man Lele wouldn’t want when you rescue her?”
Damn it. That cut deep. But if becoming that man meant saving her, he’d take that hit. He’d rather her be alive and hate him than allow anyone to harm her.
He tapped his phone against his forehead, then said, “Sorry. I’m listening.”
“Hector counted on the fact that he’d be seen on the cameras around Darling. He headed toward the Society’s compound to throw us off. He just made a turn, and he’s headed to the north side of the county. We don’t have a lock yet on where he’s going, but he isn’t going toward the Society’s compound anymore.”
Fuck! How was he supposed to keep up with where the fucker was going without his computer? His bag had a lot of useful things in it… knives, guns, electronic pulse, and a few other surprises… but no computer.
“If you still want to do this alone, that’s your call. But we are geared up and ready to join you where Cortez stops.”
And there it was. The thing that had kept him from going dark for seven years. Family. He’d be a fool to turn his back on them now. Yeah, he’d have to eat a little crow, but he didn’t give that first shit if it meant getting his girl out safely.
“Should I come to Sabre, or meet you there?”
It took a moment for Reid to respond. The relief in his friend’svoice let Sawyer know just how much of a dumb fuck he’d been. “Your call, Sawyer. Tell me how you want to play this, and we’ll be there.”
Like every time he’d needed them, Sawyer’s family had come through for him and possibly saved both him and his Little girl.
Hector thought he could take Sawyer’s babygirl and get away with it. But Hector hadn’t reckoned with the power of a Daddy’s love and the power of his Sabre Security family. But he’d soon find out just how wrong he’d been.
“Let’s do it together, bossman,” Sawyer said. “Tell me where to go.”
