To be honest, I sort of felt a sudden craving to feel like an average human right now. It was probably a dangerous feeling to have since I had recently reconnected with my vampires outside of my human genetics, but maybe this is how I would get Zane back? Perhaps this was the key to bring the merge between all of us again. I was in love with Cole, Braden, Zac, and Logan, and that’s probably why it was so easy to find my bond with my vampires again.

I wanted this, though. The human Elle—pre immortal vampire life—always wanted a hot guy like Zane to fall for her and sweep her off her feet. I was slowly feeling my urges of resentment, leaving me with each step we took up to the roof of this building.

The music was euphoric and lively. Zane’s eyes danced with the Miami lights in the background. A soft breeze blew my hair around, and the people were loud with enthusiasm as the DJ hit the right songs to keep the night alive, and I never wanted this feeling of freedom to end.

I felt carefree and liberated even if I was stepping all over Zane’s feet as he twirled me around and tried to get me to follow his lead in the dance his hips moved freely to. It took him grabbing my butt and pulling me tightly into him for me to feel the next step he would make. He grinned and started counting the dance steps we’d take together. I must have made this gorgeous specimen look like a total asshole compared to the other couples who knew what the hell they were doing, but I didn’t care. Zane’s expression was so damn attractive that it hurt all the way to my core. I wanted more of him, and I could swear I saw flames of desire ignite in his eyes to confirm he was feeling the same way.

“You need more alcohol in your system,” Zane said after twirling me around and pulling me tightly against him.

Thinking this was a romantic gesture, I went to flirt back, but I stopped when his lips left my ears, and I locked eyes with the fierce shifter.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, completely confused about how we went from dancing our awkwardness away to this.

Zane forced a smile to mask his hardened expression as he brushed a hand over my lower back and asked for a double shot of vodka.

“For the lady who has the best moves on the dance floor,” he said to the bartender after he’d spun us around to the bar.

“Trying to keep the night going, eh?” the bartender asked with a laugh while pouring the drink that I had no idea how I was going to get down.

“Zane, what the hell?” I looked at him, only to have him ignore me and slide the drink in front of me. “I can’t—”

“Follow my lead,” he said, eyes darting around the party going on behind us. “Down it. Now,” he insisted.

I eyed the drink, grateful that I’d already consumed enough booze to know this would go down fairly easily. As I threw my head back and swallowed the massive shot all at once, I glanced at Zane, watching his eyes as they studied the contents of my glass as if it were medication that I needed quickly to save my life.

I ran the back of my hand over my lips as I slammed the glass onto the counter, prompting the bartender to laugh and Zane to nod with some look of relief on his face. “I’ll take another,” I said, feeling the booze go straight to my head and any stress I was sensing off Zane’s sudden change of emotion leave me.

“Give her another shot,” Zane said, eyes back to the area of loud people behind us. “Give the lady what she wants,” he said, studying me.

“Are you sure about that? You’re going to have a rough morning.” The bartender laughed skeptically, knowing this wasn’t the only alcohol I had in my system.

“She can hold her alcohol,” Zane assured the man. “Down that fast.”

“Shit, what the fuck is going on?” I asked.

Zane gave me a flirty grin after mytoo-loudquestion raised suspicion with the bartender. “Well, doll-face,” he said slowly letting the pet name from my vampires roll off his tongue, “You not only are killing it out there on the dance floor, but you look so good in that short skirt I could practically eat you alive right here and now.”

I glanced at the bartender, unafraid to down the next shot of vodka after Zane had just alluded to a sexual activity that instantly turned me on.

“That would get our asses thrown in jail,” was my drunken response.

Zane took my hand and nodded after sliding two hundred-dollar bills to the bartender to close us out for the night, leaving a hefty tip, and then we were moving through the mob of dancing people. The room was fading on me as the liquor worked swiftly to slow my mind down. Now, I was legitimately tripping over my feet as Zane forced our way toward the exit.

“Cute thing you’ve got on that arm,” a man said, stopping us. He met Zane’s tall height and had the flawless face of a…shit, a goddamn vampire.

Zane pulled me into his side. “That’s why I’m done watching her hot ass dance in this dress. Out of my way, I’m ready to take my girl home.”

The vampire smiled, “A shame that alcohol is diluting what may be a delicious treat for me.”

“A real fucking shame,” Zane growled. “Touch my girl, and I’ll kick your ass.”

“Listen, wolf,” the vamp leaned in with two other vamps now flanking his sides, “This ismyspace, my bar, my dance floor,” he looked at me, undressing me with his eyes, “and that means she’s my girl.”

“Get the hell out of our way.”

“You’re mates with a human?” the vamp with long blond hair to the main vamp’s right side questioned. “Come on, Alex, he’s a fucking wolf. There’s plenty of delicious females out there, waiting for us to treat them to a night of fucking that they’ll only dream they could have again.”
