I glanced over from where I lay on my side on the couch, “I watched it when I was a kid.”
“Ah,” he answered, watching me with a humored expression. “A lot of teen girls fell head-over-heels for this movie a long time ago. I think Patrick Swayze was what caught their eyes. It’s a tragic shame the world lost him so early.”
“That’s for sure,” I said, trying to pay attention to the scene where Patrick Swayze was teaching the lead actress to dance, and I smiled at his frustration as she tried to learn the moves.
“Odd that it would reach you and your generation. I guess it’s one of those timeless movies,” Zane said.
I hit pause on the live stream and looked over at him. Good grief, I’d been trying to get this guy to open up over the past few days, and the one thing that was the key was a movie from the ‘80s?
“You dance?” I finally asked him.
His expression twisted up into the lightest and friendliest expression I’d seen from him in far too long.
Damn, he was so dang gorgeous. His strong jawline had two days’ worth of stubble on it, and his black eyes and hair seemed to glisten against his god-like face.
“Wouldn’t you like to know.” He smirked.
“I would,” I sat up fully, crossed my legs, and pulled a pillow against my stomach. “Obviously, you have me interested since this is the first time that I’ve seen an expression on your face that doesn’t have a look of death plastered on it.”
He rolled his eyes. “I’m a man of many talents,” he arched a playful brow at me.
“I’m all eyes…” I glanced over at Swayze, gorgeous as ever, still paused on the screen. “It’s going to take a lot of effort, though, to beat him.” I pointed toward the flat screen with my remote.
Zane smirked. “That’s probably true,” he said and went back to reading his magazine.
I wasn’t in the mood for roller coasters of emotions like this. Chit chat, totally cool, then back to avoiding reality again.
“I’ve always wanted to learn those moves,” I said, catching his attention again. “Think you could teach me?”
Zane smiled while he stared intently at his magazine. “I’m no Swayze,” he chuckled, then looked at me. “But the house is quiet, and we have no vampires here to interrupt, so maybe I’ll give you a few tips.”
“Please do.”
There was nothing sexual about where Zane and I were at right now. It was all fun. It was thrilling to try and follow his flawless lead in the simple steps he was starting me off with. My favorite part was when he flipped the television off and called for Alexa to turn on music that matched the movie’s choreography.
One of the Dirty Dancing songs came on, and I watched as he moved his hips like they weren’t even attached to his body. I bit my bottom lip, watching him seductively dance, showing me the steps that I needed but was stupid sloppy with.
“Did you date a Cuban dance queen before or something?” I asked as he counted out the steps that he was showing me.
He stopped, planted his hands on his hips, and shook his head. “Let’s go eat something.”
“Are we allowed to leave this prison of a house?” I asked, more shocked he was willing to go anywhere than anything else.
“Well,” he eyed me where I stood, “I’m starving, and you suck at dancing.” He laughed, “Let’s go hit up a Cuban restaurant. We’ll be fine. The guys have anything evil that might be looking for you up there with them. You’ll be safe. Besides, I think I owe the mother of my beautiful daughter a night out on the town.”
“Let me go change,” I said, knowing that wearing shorts and a tank was most likely not going to suit a night out in Miami with the hottest guy in the city.
“Put on a fun dress. Maybe we’ll hit a club while we’re out.”
I stopped in my tracks. “Why are you suddenly being so nice?”
“Because I thought about what you said earlier,” he answered. “You were right, although I’ll never forgive my horrible judgment call. I carry their deaths as it being my fuck up, and I always will. I just can’t let it rule my life.”
“I don’t think Nakia and Bren would want that.”
He cracked a smile, “I know they wouldn’t. They’d tell me I was acting like a beta female, pining over her alpha.”
“You mean acting like a bitch?” I teased.
