“Right now, I don’t know,” I answered truthfully. “I’m just starving again. Somehow, wolf blood seems to be making my vampire side love red meat, and Cole can’t make it fast enough.”

“Let’s go in. I’m starved too.”

Chapter Fifteen

After dinner was finished, I headed to the sink to start in on the dishes.

“So what do you think about the rest of the pack coming in?” Jen said as she dumped her plate—filled with food—into my freshly ran hot, soapy water.

“What the fuck, Jen?” I turned to see a bitchy smile curl up on her lips. “This isn’t going to work if you keep acting like a bitch who I’ve never met before. Weusedto be friends, remember those days?”

“A lot’s changed since we moved.”

I slammed my fists onto the edge of the sink and spun around to see her judging wolf eyes staring me down. “No shit! Alothas changed since you faked being my friend and bounced on my ass the second my vampires rolled into town.” I couldn’t stand to look at her stupid bitch ass face for another second, “What the hell happened to your mom anyway?”

“Like I said, a lot has changed,” her voice cracked.

I sighed. My emotions were all over the place with her in the room. She used to be my best friend. She was the one who I only wished I could have talked this all out with since my world was flipped upside down and turned inside out, and now she was a bitch who had a vendetta against me because the supernatural lifestyle forced her guys into my arms.

“Well, I’m sorry about your mom, and I’m sorry about what happened with the guys. We needed the shifters help, that’s it.”

“Yep, and you definitely got it, didn’t you?”

I closed my eyes and held back my bitchy comeback. “At least the merge worked out, and nobody was hurt.”

“Oh God,” Jen answered. “Spare me the bullshit, Elle. Why couldn’t you have been snatched up by the collectors, then none of this shit would even be happening.”

“You don’t mean that.” I spun around sending the bubbles from the soapy water floating in the air. I felt tears welling up in my eyes, “What the fuck happened to you? You’d rather I were held captive ordead? Seriously!?”

“Shut the hell up for once, Jen,” Nakia said, walking in shirtless with a sheen of sweat glistening over his six-pack abs. “You do realize she holds alpha over Zane now, right?”

Jen’s eyes were floating over the man’s shredded stomach, and she probably hated me even more than before once Mr. Sexy just walked in the room.

His eyes met mine, and I felt our pull much more strongly—like it was the day I’d first relaxed and accepted my vampires. I could sense the bond pulling us to join forces.

“She’s not an alpha. Very funny, Nakia,” she batted her eyes at her long lost love.

I had zero sympathy for her now. It was like we were never friends. It was a fake friendship anyway, so why would I expect Jen to be even borderline supportive of me and my situation? Why would I expect Jen to beJen? God help me, the only chick that I got along with were Lucas’s vamps—all except Liz—and I felt a sadness in my heart remembering how close Val and I got right before a collector took her out.

“You okay, Elle?” Nakia’s velvet-smooth voice entered my mind and sent a warmth of comfort around my breaking heart. “Damn it, Jen, get your ass out of here. Your fucked up vibes make me want to eat a silver bullet.”

I knitted my brow together, watching her slip out of the back doors, shift into a silver, long-legged wolf, and sprint through the green grass that was surrounded by hundreds of weeping willow trees.

“You okay, gem?”

“Do we have to do pet names?” I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Goddammit!”

I was enveloped in Nakia’s larger than average frame, and I smelled the fresh fragrance of his woodsy scent, letting it soothe me to my inner core.

“We can do whatever you want.” His voice was lowered.

“What the hell did Jen do? Swear to God, Elle, give the command, and I’ll kick her ass out of here,” Zane boomed. “She shifted and bolted out of here. God knows where she’s off to now.”

I leaned back and looked at both wolves and spied one of my sexy vampires eyeing the situation between the wolves and me.

“Come here, Brade,” I said, feeling more drawn to him at the moment. “Why don’t you guys go straighten shit out with her? I can’t deal with this jealousy shit. It’s bringing out the worst in me right now.”

“When the rest of the pack gets here, she will calm down,” Zane said.
