Chapter Twelve
Ididn’t have time to think about anything after I was gently, yet hurriedly set into the front seat of the Jeep, and the next thing I knew, Logan was hauling ass to get back to Zac.
When we came upon him, I saw that Zac had somehow managed to get two woven blankets to wrap up what I knew were dismembered pieces of the three vampires they’d just killed. He threw the bundles into the back of the Jeep and hopped into the seat behind me.
“Get us the hell out of here!” Zac ordered.
Logan threw the Jeep in gear, and we set off toward a lonely-looking dirt road, which seemed to have been used only by locals. Logan jerked the wheel and turned the Jeep into a dense forest of large tropical leaves. He downshifted, and the Jeep tore up the mountain.
It would have been a grand adventure if I hadn’t heard grumbling voices coming from the dismembered vampire heads that were wrapped up in the back of the Jeep.
I glanced back at Zac’s deadly expression, he was entirely vamped out…black eyes and fangs extended. He was scary as shit, but sexy too. Now was not the time to get worked up, but oddly, my veins started burning like they did when I was with Braden. I rubbed my neck and the burning that felt like it was searing the inside of my arm.
“Shit!” I heard Zac growl. “Elle, can you tone it down some?”
“Tone what down?” I countered his hostile voice. “Why don’t you tell the vampires that should be dead to shut the hell up?” I looked over at Logan whose lips were tight, face black and also lethal. “Why are they still alive?”
“The two who weren’t staked in the heart are alive. We have to burn them before their bodies start to reattach,” Logan answered with an icy edge to his voice.
“I don’t even know what that means,” I grumbled, agitated with my blood on fire.
“We just have to fry their asses, or we’ll have another fight on our hands,” Zac snapped.
The Jeep came to a sliding halt in a grassy opening, and both of my vampires were out of the thing before I could unbuckle my seatbelt.
“Stay in the Jeep!” Logan ordered as Zac pulled the two bundles out of the back.
I stepped out of the Jeep, ignoring Logan’s order. They could kiss my ass. I wanted to watch these vampires burn. They were the reason I was probably going to be stuck in the beach house while the guys freaked out that Enzo would find out about me. God knew what was going to happen after this kidnapping attempt.
Logan grabbed a duffle bag from the back seat and pulled out what looked like some kind of lighter fluid. Within seconds, the blankets were ablaze with a bright blue flame, voices wailing in agony before they suddenly stopped.
“You shouldn’t have to watch this,” Zac said, bringing an arm around me and pulling me into his side.
“Screw that,” I said. “These idiots are the reason you’re all probably going to force me to stay inside for the remainder of our time here. I feel like Cole is just looking for a stupid excuse for that to happen anyway.” I looked up at Zac as he watched the flames, seeing the blue flicker in his topaz eyes as the strange fire incinerated the bodies faster than I’d ever thought possible. “Maybe I’m wrong. We’re probably moving again with no one telling me what the hell is going on anyway.”
“We’re not moving. You’re safe here. We’re just dealing with a nest of created vampires. Some vamp turned these humans, and it fucking pisses us off that we had to kill them,” Logan said. “In some sick way, they’re innocent. Now, we get the task of finding the dick who changed them and why.”
“Then we’ll kill that asshole, set boundaries for this nest, and move on.”
“What?” I asked as Zac led me back to the Jeep.
“Enzo isn’t the only immortal who finds it entertaining to change innocent humans into these monsters. It’s cruel and sickening. We sort of policed this shit while we were on the run before we found you.”
Logan helped me up into the Jeep before he and Zac got in and Logan drove cautiously from the area.
“What the hell were you doing earlier, Elle?” Zac asked from the back seat.
“I was just trying to find a dressing room when that kid got a hold of me. I didn’t know—”
“Not then,” his voice was lower. “On the drive up here, your blood was so potent that I could’ve pulled you from your seat to drink from you. I’ve never experienced that sort of bloodlust in my entire existence.”
“Oh,” I rubbed my forearm where my blood felt like it had been boiling earlier. “I have no idea. It happened once before when I was with Braden. That’s when Braden drank from me, and we connected on another level. I could read his thoughts at the time and everything. It’s like my blood was on fire, and he said it called to him.”
“How does that have anything to do with what happened earlier?” Zac said.
“I don’t know. My blood felt like it was on fire when I looked back and saw you all vamped out. I can’t control it. It’s like my body knew you needed my blood or something. Hell if I know.”
“Another new mystery we have with our little Life Blood.” Logan smiled over at me.
