But then, something clicks.

His muscles and veins strain against his skin, and a guttural roar passes his lips. I’ve never witnessed him this angry, and I’m scared to see this side of him. This isn’t a momentary reaction—this is a lifetime of being made to feel like he would never be good enough to carry the Beaumont name.

And now, it all makes sense.

“Step away,” Aston warns with a snarl.

I yank on Maddy’s arm, motioning for us to leave. Mr. Beaumont steps toward Maddy, but Aston presses his hand on Mr. Beaumont’s chest to stop him. Aston’s tall stature overshadows him as he continues to stare at him ferociously.

“You want to ruin this family just like your brother?” he accuses Maddy wildly.

Maddy looks into my eyes, begging me to help her. I hold on to her hand tight, then stare directly into the devil’s eyes.

“Maddy and Aston didn’t ruin your family,” I inform him with a hard stare. “You did, Harvey Beaumont.”

And with the truth said, I leave the room with my best friend so she’s not forced to make the biggest mistake of her life.

A mistake her father had planned all along.

CHAPTER 28Aston

Anger thrums through my veins, unapologetic in its ferocity.

His eyesburnwith resentment.

The resentment was so poisonous it destroyed his ego and made him a monster.

My entire life now makes perfect sense.

From the moment I was born, my existence reminded Harvey Beaumont of what it feels like to lose. What it feels like to losecontrol.

His wife, my mother, chose someone else.

Yet, we all paid the price for her infidelity.

My sister is standing beside Everleigh with her head bowed, clutching onto her, as my father continues to spit hateful words. On many occasions, I have witnessed him lose his temper, consumed by raw anger and frustration.

But nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever compare to what I am seeing now.

For once, my mother is standing straight, holding her head high, and no longer imprisoned by the man who held her affair over their marriage.

A marriage built on lies and deceit.

It was hardly a moment to feel proud of her sudden strength because in the end, all the lies they spun destroyed one person’s life.

Mine.

I motion for my sister to leave before she changes her mind. If there’s anythingherfather does well, it’s manipulate those he claims to love. I also have my guard up, unsure of just how far he will take it. If he dares lay a finger on any of the women inside this room, his life is over.

I will make sure of it.

And then, Everleigh stands up to the man who despises strong and confident women. He is never shy in expressing his opinions on what he believes a woman’s role should be.

But like all of us, she is done with his mind games.

“Maddy and Aston didn’t ruin your family,” she informs him with a hard gaze. “You did, Harvey Beaumont.”

Everleigh holds Madelina’s hand to usher her out of the room quietly. As they step outside, I quickly follow to grab her wrist, stopping her momentarily. My hand dips into my pocket to retrieve my car keys, handing them to her. “Take my car, get her out of here,” I command.
