Threats against Medwin’s family had been low since the dog blew up a guy and sacred the shit out of some journalists outside of a petrol station. No one wants to be the guy getting blown up by a dog because you break the law. Okay, the public didn’t know the dog did it. It was some new Moonscale security measure as far as the general public knew.
“We can be Teal’s mate and a guard,”my cat complained.
“I know that. You know that. I just don’t think the rest of the world knows that and I can’t lose another job. There’s no more left. It always ends the same way. I beat the living daylights out of some shithead. At least, if I do that here the odds are that it’s the shithead I’m supposed to keep away from the baby.”
“Beating up shitheads shouldn’t be a liability. It should get us bonus pay,”he yawned.
It should but it didn’t at most jobs. If Clarence Moonscale didn’t consider me traumatized, he might’ve let one of his judges toss my furry ass in jail a long time ago.
“Though, he kept us away from his grandkids, didn’t he?”my cat mused.
That wasn’t on purpose. At least I didn’t think it was on purpose. I was older than the triplets. They were tiny little things when the war happened. Hell, maybe they were still in their eggs. I rubbed the heel of my hand against my forehead and tried hard not to think about that. It didn’t matter.
Guard.
I was a Moonscale guard now.
I was a Moonscale guard and I was here to protect the tiny baby.
Baby Robin. Named after Robin’s egg blue because Ambry couldn’t stand to break the tradition the triplets’ carrier started. A tiny baby dragon. Probably had some fur in his shifted form. I’d have kittens soon and --- I shook my head. What the actual fuck? My hormones needed to sit down and take a number. There would be no kittens or hatchlings in my future. Not until this job was done at least. So what was that? Like twenty years? In twenty years Baby Robin should be able to defend himself.
“Go talk to him, Cobalt,” Odie whispered on the other side of the door. “He’s freaking out. Teal is being weird. I know dicks have a mind of their own and all. I have a dick. I know that but he’s acting out of character. Go tell Ciro that he’s welcome here. It’s not his fault your grandparents hired him. He probably didn’t even know we said no until he was here, listening to Teal grumble about it all and then be weird and get hard because he was in his underwear. Seriously. You have to go talk to him. He’s--- He was in our support group.”
“Mate, I’m sure he’s fine. Guards are made of tougher stuff than you think. If Teal not wanting him here makes him cry, then he probably shouldn’t be a guard. Omega or not.”
Shit!
Who told him?
“Uh…. Odie’s his mate. They talk on the head link,”my cat chimed in with the obvious.“Don’t worry so much. See Cobalt isn’t going to give you any special treatment. He doesn’t even want to come and talk to you about it.”
A second later the door opened and I almost fell backwards into Cobalt’s pajama clad legs. I bit back a sigh. What happened to me being fine in his mind?
“Need anything?” I asked, pushing myself upright.
“I was sent out here to ask you that,” Cobalt said, stepping forward and closing the door behind him. “Odie is worried that Teal made you uncomfortable.”
That was the understatement of the century.
“Not at all. Bodyguards see all sorts of things. I understand that he’s not thrilled that I’m here. Sometimes clients feel that guards are an insult to their ability to protect themselves and those they care about. If he comes back to complain, I’ll assure him that I will allow any threat to eat him that he doesn’t care for me to fight. I’m here to protect the baby.”
“Don’t let anyone eat Teal if you can help it,” Cobalt said and rubbed the back of his neck. “Odie wanted me to tell you that Teal isn’t a creep. I sort of feel like that’s a given but then again, I don’t have to walk around wondering which alphas are normal people and which ones are creeps. Though, if Teal turns into a creep, I’ll skin him myself and wear his tail as a belt. Not because you couldn’t do it yourself but because no brother of mine gets to turn into a creep.”
“Teal isn’t a creep. He’s draconic and he’s male but he’s not a creep.Honestly, if we can be honest, I’m not that comfortable discussing why your brother had an erection. This is sort of more awkward than that. You can tell Odie that I’m fine but please don’t send you to talk about dicks anymore.”
Because if you do I might have to go straight to your house and crawl into bed with your brother and then I’ll my job and all my training will have been for nothing and--- Of course, I didn’t tell Cobalt any of that.
“Sorry,” he said and rubbed the back of his neck again. “If you want to go to the house to change clothes or something, feel free to. I’ll be up for a while. Odie is tossing and turning. He can’t seem to get comfortable. Dolores says that he’s not close to labor but eh, maybe you know how it goes. So, yeah. I’ll be up for a while. There is an empty guestroom right now.”
“I do know how it goes,” I nodded and spoke up to save him from rambling. “I’d be concerned if you weren’t worried. I think I will take my stuff inside, if you’ll be alright.”
“Odie would insist,” he nodded. “I know you’re here to be a guard but if you stick around, you’ll find out that it isn’t like other jobs. We’re not Clarence and Medwin. We can’t do stuffy.”
“I get it. I think that’s why Medwin asked for me. Told me to feel free to use the lift as much as I wanted.”
“Did he say anything about Liam Moonscale?” Cobalt asked and I blinked.
“Are you expecting him to come visit?” I asked unsure what the first mate of Heartville had to do with Baby Robin otherwise.
