I held my hand out for the keys before he finished the sentence. As much as I wanted to ride in the backseat with Odell he was right. They had done the work of stocking while we spent our time cuddled up on the floor. It was only fair they had the chance to snuggle up for a few minutes.
“You got shotgun then,” I said, holding my hand out to help Odell sit down. I made sure he was all properly tucked inside the silver winged beast and double-checked with Indigo that he and Ambry were settled in safely in the back before I slid behind the wheel and brought the wings down.
Inside the car was a whole new world. The car was luxury sized but shrank to the size of a closet with all of us sitting there. Odell’s scent was everywhere almost completely coveringup Indigo and Ambry. Normally, if it were just the two of us and our dates we put them in the backseat together. If Teal was with us, we ended up in all sorts of weird arrangements.
I took Odell’s hand in mine as I pulled the car out of the parking lot. My brother and Ambry curled up together in the backseat, but the latter kept his hand on my mate’s shoulder. How strange this all must’ve been for them. I shook my head trying not to think about how the stench bombs still clung to my mate’s skin.
“RED LIGHT!”My dragon roared inside my head and my foot hit the brakes automatically. I had to keep my thoughts on the road. I had to keep my—Where was I going again?
“Park,” Indigo said. “Pull into the hair place’s lot. I don’t think driving makes sense right now.”
“You sure?” I asked, but was already swinging the car into the parking lot. He was right. If my dragon had to give me driving tips I shouldn’t be driving. Neither should he probably. I wasn’t letting either of our mates near the steering wheel until I knew if they could drive. If one of us murdered the Moonscale Wing 7 it was whatever, but I wasn’t sure our parents would feel that way about our mates doing it.
“They’re going to call soon, probably,” Indigo said, picking up on my thoughts over our link.
“Probably,” I nodded. “Definitely. They’ll probably call Teal, though. They think he tells them everything.”
“They wish he told them everything,” Indigo laughed.
“No, they don’t,” I shook my head. “That way if our grandparents ask what we’re up to, they have plausible deniability.”
“What are you two up to?” Ambry asked from the backseat.
“Nothing illegal. Not us anyway,” Indigo shrugged. “Teal’s business is his business.”
“Are we walking?” Odell asked. “It’s only about a mile. It’s not that far to the apartment.”
Indigo and I shared a long look. If we were alone, we’d have risked the drive. It’s almost impossible to kill an alpha dragon. As good as Odell smelled, he also smelled squishy and fragile. Sure, he was a shifter and probably had more mental resilience than a lot of dragons from surviving the war, but I wanted him to be okay and be squishy. Squishy seemed like the natural state for wolves. London was more or less safe to walk at night but was it as safe for squishy wolves?
“We walk in the dark alone a lot,” Ambry said, patting around trying to find the door handle.
“It’s up here,” Odell said a moment later.
“You that ready to be away from me?” Indigo asked, his voice sounded more hurt than I expected.
“He’s a little bit claustrophobic,” Odell said, opening the passenger side door.
Ambry slipped out and we all followed him moving as one. I wondered what the onlookers thought. I glanced around the parking lot. There were a few cars around. Mostly teenagers trying to find a place to smoke their pot or make out without being disturbed by adults.
“I remember those days,” Indigo chuckled as he looked Ambry up and down, wondering if he was supposed to pull him close or let him breathe. Neither of us were sure which was better for claustrophobia.
Odell opened his arms and I almost hugged him, but Ambry walked into them. I moved closer to Indigo, using our bodies to block the view of our mates from the street. I had the urge to snatch them up and fly off with both of them.
“If you two need a minute you can talk inside the car or we can get inside the car or---” Indigo said only stopping when Ambry finally looked at him.
“Thanks,” he said and slid into the backseat of the car, dragging Odell with him. My mate pulled the door closed behind them.
“I miss them already,” Indigo said as soon as the wing clicked shut.
“Me too. What do we do now?”
“I’m not sure. I guess we guard. Do you think they’re talking about us?” Indigo asked.
“Maybe. Probably or where to hide the bodies or sex toys or something like that,” I chuckled, trying to break the tension. “Maybe Ambry doesn’t like being inside of cars. Some furry shifters fear them. I think they even invented some new phobia name for it. I don’t remember what they’re calling it, though.”
“Maybe,” Indigo bit his lip. “Do you think we’ve already fucked this up?”
“I don’t think so. We didn’t do anything. Should we have insisted that they come to our place?”
