“We already know he’s guilty, that’s not under question. We followed him during a kidnapping.”

The lawyer looks at David harshly. David hangs his head.

What the hell is he trying to accomplish by not telling his attorney everything? Or by pretending he isn’t guilty?

“Who contacts you with the drop house location?”

“I get a text from an unknown number.”

“How do you know what kinds of girls to target?”

“I choose them myself.”

“Who did you originally borrow the money from?”

“A loan shark.”

“What’s his name?”

“I can’t tell you that.”

“David, come on, man. What do you think we’re here for? The FBI has beenreallygood to you so far, with the wedding and the honeymoon, keeping up pretenses. I can’t continue to promise that if you don’t cooperate.”

“If I tell you who it is, they’ll kill me.”

“If you don’t tell me you’re going to prison. I thought you planned to pay them back?”

“I don’t have access to Laurel’s money like I thought I would.”

“What’s the plan then, David?”

“Status quo.” He shrugs.

“Are you stupid?” I slam a hand to the table, frustrated. “There is no status quo, you don’t get to continue kidnapping women.”

“What do you expect me to do, Reed?”

“I expect you to cooperate and give us a name that we can use to take down the entire fucking operation.”

“I don’t have those names. I’ve got my loan guy, and that’s it.”

“Then what’s his name?”

David sighs. “Nick Moony.”

“What’s his number?”

“I don’t know. I met with him in person.”

“Where?” I write down the information he gives me, confused by his behavior today, the addition of the lawyer, and how he thought this was going to go down.

“Tell me, how did you think this was all going to play out?”

David rubs his fingers across his brow. “I don’t know, man. I did what I had to do to get myself out of a jam.”

“There are always other ways, David. Selling human beings is never the fucking answer.”

He shrugs, staying nonchalant.
